Saw a few questions on Tumblr...but my Tumblr is a bit of a ghost town, so I'm gonna kill some time and write things here instead. 1. Do you prefer traditional drawing, or digital?
-These days it's 95% digital. Though I do enjoy pencil sketching and will sometimes use those as a base for digital pics.2. How long have you been drawing?
-Since a child. However, I never put any thought into it until my mid teens, and didn't start pulling things together properly until my early 20's.3. How many classes have you taken?
-None. Probably shows. Last time I did art as a subject was high school, but there wasn't much drawing. More like "express your feelings in a collage", which I hated (I think I can class myself as an INTP/TJ personality so those kind of conceptual frilly things really turned me off). 4. What’s your favorite thing to draw?
-Elves, faces, character and armour designs.5. What’s your least favorite thing to draw?
-Indoor scenes and anything that needs perspectives. 6. How often do you use references?
-Here and there. Sometimes model photos, sometimes with 3D poses. I should do pose studies more often really.7. Do you draw professionally, or just for fun?
-Just for fun. It's great as a chill out and to get into the zone with. The main hurdle is ideas and commitment to the early stages of a piece where things are looking rough.8. How much time do you spend drawing on an average day?
-I don't draw every day. I tend to do it the most in the evenings, with a higher chance of starting something at the weekends I think?9. Are you confident about your art?
-Plenty of ups and downs. I mean, I think
I can draw an appealing stylised face? Certainly miles better than a few years ago. But I often struggle to do work with more than 1 character or that tells a story. Need to work on that composition too.10. Is it okay for people to ask you about your process?
-Sure, but it's not super exciting. I suspect I'm not as skilled at Photoshop as I think so my layering etc is pretty simple. One of the best things I ever learned was to shade using a purple colour on Linear Burn at 30-40% opacity.11. Do you prefer to keep your art personal, or do you like drawing things for other people?
-This sounds weird but I hardly ever show my work to people in real life, apart from friends. But people know I can draw, as I may talk about it or it shows up in my doodles at work. Ehhh it makes me feel awkward that less well acquainted people may think "ohhh so that's what he thinks/likes?", especially OC related material which let's face it, is often an author-insert/wish fulfilment if not careful. But for random art-minded folk on the internet it's ok...I don't mind. 12. How long does an average piece take you to complete?
-From 1-2 days to a week, depending on complexity.13. Do you draw more today than you did in the past, or do you draw less?
-Arguably less over the long term. I did a lot of stuff in 2007-2009 when I was a student and churned out a lot of crappy digital art as it was quick to do in my older styles. Less now that I work full time, but I think I'm relatively productive this year so far...14. What are you currently trying to improve on?
-Anatomy, interesting lighting, little scenes/vignettes15. What is the most difficult thing for you to draw?
-Hands, heavily foreshortened poses, sense of movement/force, emotional impact.16. What is the easiest thing for you to draw?
-Eyes, simple headshot portraits, 3/4 view poses, grimy/worn in details.17. Do you like to draw in silence, or with music?
-Sometimes TV, but usually a hodge-podge of different music via YouTube. Current favourites are Simpsons remixes from Dankmus, and vintage/alternative covers by Postmodern Jukebox or Puddles Pity Party. Other favourites include Nat King Cole (I'm serious), REM, Ashley Barrett/Darren Korb's works and The Seatbelts (of Cowboy Bebop fame). 18. What inspires you to not just make art, but to be a better artist?
-I think as part of my personality, I can't just sit still and be happy. I often need something to occupy myself, think about and improve upon. Art fills that gap nicely.
I tag...well I dunno...go for it if you want...
