Cleaning Up

Journal Entry: Sun Nov 18, 2018, 7:35 AM

I've recently gone through my gallery and cleared out a lot of the old stuff. This account has been going for over a decade, and while it's sometimes nice to see the progress of my art, I don't necessarily want it all out there anymore.

Over the years I've put many older pics into storage on DeviantART, but this time I've really pruned things, removing most of the works older than 2014. A lot of it has dated badly or does not reflect my current interests. Sometimes I get faves and watches for things I'll never re-visit, so it feels a little dishonest. For example, I can tell you I do not draw much military stuff anymore (real world or Carrovia). No politics or anything...I love reading about military history but I just started to focus on other things in terms of art, sorry.

Things that have survived the removal are my papercraft montages, certain popular pics (by my modest standards at least) and old work/milestones I have a soft spot for. If you really miss a certain piece (for whatever reason  ), send me a note and maybe I could send you it?

---

So what do I want to draw?
-More inventive OCs, as one-off designs or as part of an existing universe/fandom. I need to be less boxed in by what I've done in the past.
-More scenes with my Elder Scrolls OCs. They exist as part of a timeline but I need to better show a sense of their history and relationships, either by scenes or short stories in the descriptions.
-General fanart of cool game characters (business as usual in other words).
-Other people's OCs. I wish I could do more art trades and stuff...

And the big uncertainty...
-Is it time for a new account?

2018 Updates

Journal Entry: Sat Aug 4, 2018, 9:27 AM

Hey all, I guess I haven't written anything in a while. Sometimes it's hard to think of interesting things to write, though I must admit, I do like to sometimes use this as a diary of sorts for my own ramblings.

I went to New York city in June with my family, which is the first time I've been on holiday (not counting work trips) since 2011. It was great! I've always wanted to go see the sights and go up some tall buildings, so we got a city pass and did a bunch of stuff such as the Empire State Building, One World Trade, USS intrepid museum ship, the Met Museum, Brooklyn Bridge and so on. Although I suck at drawing buildings, I actually love looking at the architecture of cities. I'm going to be a bit of a hipster and say my favourite skyscraper is the Woolworth Building which is beautifully ornate and was built all the way back in 1912. That they were able to build such things way back then is fascinating, and a glimpse of the powerhouse economy that the US would eventually become later in the 20th century. The worst building that exists, and is shockingly now the 2nd tallest is 432 Park Avenue . Seriously, it looks like what you would get if you asked a child to draw a skyscraper. A lazy, super narrow rectangle that really feels out of place.

Besides that, I've not really been up to much. A bit of airsoft, the usual gaming and reading junk online, that's all.

---

At work, I'm looking at a bunch of legacy data from wells drilled in the Mexican sector of the Gulf of Mexico (no I do not work for BP before you ask...). So I've had to brush up on some spanish to figure a few things out. Luckily many of the technical terms are similar to english, or reasonably guessable with google translate. This project's gonna last a year, and I don't think my company quite appreciates the sheer amount of data they purchased. Still, guaranteed work is nice; I doubt they're gonna cut any 'ground floor' jobs this year, which is a relief...:phew:

---

This year I'm putting out a lot of art by comparison. It's probably because I'm doing line art based pics that are generally quicker than full paintings.

I'm also interested in commissioning people to draw my OCs. It's great to see other people's takes on my designs and it also helps me see how I might improve on my own style.

So far I've had the following pieces done by these super artists: :D

Please check their work out! :)

Artist Questions

Journal Entry: Sat Apr 28, 2018, 12:23 PM

Saw a few questions on Tumblr...but my Tumblr is a bit of a ghost town, so I'm gonna kill some time and write things here instead. Blush

1. Do you prefer traditional drawing, or digital?
-These days it's 95% digital. Though I do enjoy pencil sketching and will sometimes use those as a base for digital pics.

2. How long have you been drawing?
-Since a child. However, I never put any thought into it until my mid teens, and didn't start pulling things together properly until my early 20's.

3. How many classes have you taken?
-None. Probably shows. Last time I did art as a subject was high school, but there wasn't much drawing. More like "express your feelings in a collage", which I hated (I think I can class myself as an INTP/TJ personality so those kind of conceptual frilly things really turned me off).

4. What’s your favorite thing to draw?
-Elves, faces, character and armour designs.

5. What’s your least favorite thing to draw?
-Indoor scenes and anything that needs perspectives.

6. How often do you use references?
-Here and there. Sometimes model photos, sometimes with 3D poses. I should do pose studies more often really.

7. Do you draw professionally, or just for fun?
-Just for fun. It's great as a chill out and to get into the zone with. The main hurdle is ideas and commitment to the early stages of a piece where things are looking rough.

8. How much time do you spend drawing on an average day?
-I don't draw every day. I tend to do it the most in the evenings, with a higher chance of starting something at the weekends I think?

9. Are you confident about your art?
-Plenty of ups and downs. I mean, I think I can draw an appealing stylised face? Certainly miles better than a few years ago. But I often struggle to do work with more than 1 character or that tells a story. Need to work on that composition too.

10. Is it okay for people to ask you about your process?
-Sure, but it's not super exciting. I suspect I'm not as skilled at Photoshop as I think so my layering etc is pretty simple. One of the best things I ever learned was to shade using a purple colour on Linear Burn at 30-40% opacity.

11. Do you prefer to keep your art personal, or do you like drawing things for other people?
-This sounds weird but I hardly ever show my work to people in real life, apart from friends. But people know I can draw, as I may talk about it or it shows up in my doodles at work. Ehhh it makes me feel awkward that less well acquainted people may think "ohhh so that's what he thinks/likes?", especially OC related material which let's face it, is often an author-insert/wish fulfilment if not careful. But for random art-minded folk on the internet it's ok...I don't mind.

12. How long does an average piece take you to complete?
-From 1-2 days to a week, depending on complexity.

13. Do you draw more today than you did in the past, or do you draw less?
-Arguably less over the long term. I did a lot of stuff in 2007-2009 when I was a student and churned out a lot of crappy digital art as it was quick to do in my older styles. Less now that I work full time, but I think I'm relatively productive this year so far...

14. What are you currently trying to improve on?
-Anatomy, interesting lighting, little scenes/vignettes

15. What is the most difficult thing for you to draw?
-Hands, heavily foreshortened poses, sense of movement/force, emotional impact.

16. What is the easiest thing for you to draw?
-Eyes, simple headshot portraits, 3/4 view poses, grimy/worn in details.

17. Do you like to draw in silence, or with music?
-Sometimes TV, but usually a hodge-podge of different music via YouTube. Current favourites are Simpsons remixes from Dankmus, and vintage/alternative covers by Postmodern Jukebox or Puddles Pity Party. Other favourites include Nat King Cole (I'm serious), REM, Ashley Barrett/Darren Korb's works and The Seatbelts (of Cowboy Bebop fame).

18. What inspires you to not just make art, but to be a better artist?
-I think as part of my personality, I can't just sit still and be happy. I often need something to occupy myself, think about and improve upon. Art fills that gap nicely.

 I tag...well I dunno...go for it if you want...

About Me:

Project scientist with an artistic streak.

I mostly do game fanart, OCs and occasionally military/dieselpunk. Don't follow me for anything super specific, because my interests tend to move around a bit!

In the past I was known as Xenonray and was a designer and builder of papercrafts. I don't do this anymore but the templates are still freely distributed in my gallery or over on my old blog. If you ever build any I'm always thrilled to see any pictures you might have! If you have any questions or need help, just ask through a comment or note!

Find me on Steam as Avrin. Message me first so I know who you are though.
