I created this as part of an exercise: 'draw two scenes from a novel which evoke strong imagery in your mind'. I chose a scene from the Dune novel series by Frank Herbert, where Alia meets the great sand-worm after it has devoured all the people from her village.
I started with lead pencils for the composition and first outlines on standard college block paper. I set the general tones with layers of colored pencil and then accentuated contours and put in depth, contrasts and dark shadows with ink pens; especially for the inside of the sand worm's mouth. I used a white highlighter for the scales, the hair of Alia and whirls of the sand. To highlight the teeth I used blue brush pens, and a golden ink brush pen to make the sand more lively. I blended the pencil colors with a water brush pen.
