I never known what "Miacis" means. Which language is it? It doesn't sound Latin or Greek. If it does, what does it mean?

According to Dougal Dixon's World Encyclopedia of Dinosaurs and Prehistoric Animals, it means "mother animal"

Either "ancestral hunter," or "ancestor of Nimrod (the Hunter)"
