Lapitiguana impensa by avancna Lapitiguana impensa by avancna
Comparison of the extinct Giant Fijian Iguana, Lapitiguana impensa, and two Viti Levu Giant Pigeons, Natunaornis gigoura, from prehistoric Fiji. The latter would have been as large as chickens. The former would have been as large as a green iguana, Iguana iguana.

The genus name of the iguana refers to the Lapita Culture, an ancient culture of potters who inhabited Polynesia and Micronesia, and are believed to be the ancestors of most Polynesian cultures. "Lapita" is a corruption of "xapeta'a," which means "to dig a hole," or "(a) location where one digs."
