I used to think love was proven by how much weight a person could carry. Not the bright kind of love that writes letters or remembers birthdays, but the ancient kind— the mule on the mountain path, the bridge that does not collapse, the wall that stays standing through winter after winter. People often mistake endurance for permanence. They lean. Then they rest. Then they build their houses against you. No one notices when a bridge grows tired. Only when it cracks. Then everyone asks what happened. As if endurance were not a slow form of burning. I wonder now if a relationship fails the moment gratitude becomes expectation. The moment sacrifice is entered into the ledger as rent. Then one day you ask for water and discover you have been mistaken for a well. A well is loved for what it provides. Not for its thirst. Perhaps wisdom is not learning how to carry more. Perhaps it is learning that carrying is not love. Perhaps the highest form of love is to stand beside
