Well by now most people in the video games industry would be well aware but its definitely a very hard time to be working on our line of work. Unfortunately my position was made redundant a week back as one of the Senior Concept Artists at Krome Studios and so begins a new chapter in my career and not just the end of one.

As most people would expect its never an easy thing to be put in such a situation, especially in such a small industry as there is within Brisbane Australia. One thing I do know is that with change comes growth, and with this period of soul searching and uncertainty all you can do is stay true to yourself and your passion. People will always try and dis/encourage you and put thoughts into your head and you will become very easily impressionable to throwing the towel in altogether but you need to stay the course, remember your skills and what they are worth and find a new avenue to enjoy the fruits of your hard work so far. Like the rest of those made redundant in my industry all around the world, I will not lose focus of why I started doing this, and these people need to remember that we are the talent and without the talent the Publishers dont have a product to sell. Publishers are already at a stalemate. The next few years will see a MASSIVE downsize in the number games published, and the majority of these will be sequels or Original IP from proven companies like id, Lionhead or Bungie or Publisher owned studios like Activision/Blizzard, Ubisoft, EA or Infinity Ward. If the remaining studios dont intend on making DLC/casual/social or online games Im afraid their business strategy just disappeared for the next foreseeable future unless they can partner with a Publisher to produce regular and quick turnaround Licensed IP. Sadly this is the state of our industry, and for those studying still hoping to join it, I wish you all the best in trying.

While I still have a strong desire to work within the gaming scene and produce AAA titles which are both innovative as well as fun to play the realization that without relocation there just isnt many jobs around. Its a giant game of musical chairs, and all the chairs I see appear to be taken for the short term. With this being the case I have decided to attempt to kick start my freelancing buisiness until I am again employed and focus on improving my skill set which I have not been in a position to improve over the past half decade. Some of these areas include anatomy and character dynamics, storyboarding and storytelling/narrative, polished illustration level rendering techniques and product/prop design. For so long I have focused on my speed, range of ideation, colour theory, presentation techniques, composition and environment design that I truly feel this is a chance to improve and round off my skill set so that I'm an even more rounded artist and illustrator for the next Studio which picks me up. I have no doubt that over the next coming months with the free time now available to me I should be able to adequately focus on each specific area in such as way that working fulltime never previously permitted.

Ive decided to step further into freelance illustration focusing on covers, promotional, editorial and poster work for the video game, film and tv and visual entertainment industries much along the lines of one of my biggest inspirations Marko Djurdjevic.

With this new development unfortunately any and all tutorials I was working on are cancelled including my already completed Colour theory tutorial as I hope you can all understand. Ive spent so many years helping others improve their skills that I fear I have let myself down. It wont be long until Im right back up again, you just wait and see.

Feel free to drop me a line if you have any commissions or freelance work at autaux@gmail.com or just to say howdy dudey and remember to visit my website over the coming weeks/months as to my progress.

As promised my new website went live last night (technically this morning, but you all know how it is!) Special thanks goes to my girlfriend Ania for being so patient with me while I kept changing my mind on the small details hehe without her web development skills it definitely wouldn't have been possible.

COMING SOON!

Online store - Prints and Tshirt designs and hopefully much much more!

Tutorials - Online learning, tutorials on Color Theory, perspective, composition and a whole lot more!

Commissions - Those people who have requested personal commissions will soon get their wish as I shall be taking on a small amount each month from the start of the new year on.

Art - Lots more art and much much more of it...

ps. on a side note, anyone still using IE7 (and especially IE6) really needs to update their internet browser NOW. I'm honestly surprised anyone still uses IE6 anymore but apparently 10% still do. I personally suggest goggle Chrome for best possible browsing speeds or Mozilla/Firefox but IE8 isn't as bad as the previous versions. Youll find a dramatic improvement!

Ive been working off and on in my spare time to do a giant color tutorial pdf, consisting of about 20-30 smaller topics and such which I plan to post and share with you all once its ready... feel free to learn from it and share it at your digression so long as it stays in its original format (presumably a pdf at this stage) as Id like to keep credit for all the hours and hours of hard work Ive been putting into it. You all know how it is :D

I also plan on posting up my new site soon, its had a major overhaul and with the aid of my gorgeous girlfriend Ania will hopefully include a nice area for tutorials like the ones above. I plan on covering a lot more topics (and learning as I go too). I will also be posting a lot more loose sketches and speed paints on Conceptart.org in my sketchbook so if you're over there keep an eye out. Links soon!

Hey All, well it turns out today I was planning on returning to you all and posting all the scribbles, paintings and sketches ive done over the past year or so just to break back into the whole DA thing but it turns out I left my portable HD at work with all my art on it haha it unfortunately also had the color theory tute I have been writing in my spare time over the past year on it as well so you will see all that tomorrow!

Ive got a few big plans in the work, one is a return to my old Valhalla game pitch idea. Im planning a 5 page preview/promo fully painted, written and lettered by me. Should be possibly the first propper finished sequentials ive ever done entirely myself since I was about 15 or so haha I also plan to enter a lot more competitions online, just generally partake in more art forums like I used to. I really do miss it! Ive been away for so long now that it makes me wonder why I ever stopped. Heck I cant even remember when.

Some more plans from me soon:

New website
Street Fighter Tribute art book submission (and book once its printed!)
Darkstalkers Tribute art book submission (and book once its printed!)
and also a bunch of guys at work started an art jam blog called humongous3000 which as soon as its a little further developed we will unleash upon you all. Some of the guys I work with are very talented as you will soon see!

well until tomorrow!

So I got back this week from Wellington New Zealand after partaking in the Marama Massive Black Workshop held over last weekend and boy what a rush! I once again feel inspired to create art once I get home and have almost no energy left... which is something I have worried I wouldnt ever get back. Meeting so many great artists and seeing them at their craft made one thing obvious to me; Im lazy and I dont put in enough time. This is something I plan to remedy. I managed to win a compertition and go out for drinks/dinner with all the Massive Black guys after the Workshop which was really cool, got a chance to properly talk to Jame Kei, Wes Burt, Carl Dobsky and a few other guys and theyre all top blokes :) I just want to say thanks for inspiring me so much and hopefully we will meet again at the next Workshop.

I also managed a trip to Melbourne the week prior to that for the Armageddon Convention and met an amazing artist by the name of Colin Wilson, who I really was blown away that Australia has such talent which I didnt know about already!

So I guess this Journal marks a turning point for me, I realized that to enjoy art like I used to I must firstly be doing art. This also means Ill be posting on here again, Ill also be posting on CGtalk and Conceptart.org regularly for those who also are on those sites and will be checking out CGHub as I hear its also neat. I also plan on starting small freelance jobs and personal projects but will have to talk to work about these before I do (for contractual reasons).

So be warned, Adams coming for ya!

Title: Happy Ending
----

I'm in a movie
Where boy meets girl
What happens to me
In this brave new world

Do I listen to my heart, do I listen to my head?
So I look at what I see, or remember what I read?
When I tell you how I feel, do I wonder what I've said?

Is there nothing we can do about it, anyone
Anyone can be so hard hearted
But everyone
Still everbody wants a happy ending

It's not so easy, it's '84 now
How tough must we be to ask for more now?
Do I listen to my head, do I listen to my heart?
Do I try to feel the same as I feel when we're apart?
Do I think about the end when it's only just the start?

Is there nothing we can do about it, anyone
Anyone can be so hard hearted
But everyone
Still everbody wants a happy ending

I get so scared when I see the end but it's against our case
Each movie so far this year ends up with someone crying
Or even someone dying

Do I listen to my head, do I listen to my heart?
Do I try to feel the same as I feel when we're apart?
Do I think about the end when it's only just the start?

Is there nothing we can do about it, anyone
Anyone can be so hard hearted
But everyone
Still everbody wants a happy ending
