Hey there, I'm Austen Mengler - a self employed pop horror concept artist, illustrator & convention exhibitor from Perth, Western Australia who loves drawing monsters!
I've been drawing since I could hold a pencil, and since 2010 after graduating Curtin University (Bachelor of Arts: Design) I've been working professionally full time as a concept artist & illustrator on a variety of international freelance projects, creating traditional pencil & ink & digital Photoshop concept art, illustration, character & creature designs for films, video games, album covers, Kickstarter projects, comics, graphic novels & more.
My most recent client & publishing works include designing the title creature design & red carpet poster (with for the 2019 Australian Horror Film “The Faceless Man” by Melbourne’s Chapter 5 Studios & working on the red carpet poster with my partner Jenny Mackintosh, zombie makeup special effects work on Pogo's “Horrorland music video”, as well as creating & donating my painting “Escape” to be included in the "Australia Burns" bushfire relief graphic novel & the From Ashes zine.
Since 2013 I've also regularly exhibited at pop culture conventions, collector & art events in Perth, WA and all around Australia, including performing live demo workshops and talking on panels about my concept art process.
As well as freelance projects for clients, I've also been developing and releasing my own original horror art projects and collections, including:
POP HORROR - A series of surreal warped pop culture parodies, reimagining my favourite characters as nightmare fuel!
EXECUTION - My science fiction, fantasy & post apocalyptic world building project, which started as a graphic novel project while at university. An expansive world of characters and creatures.
MY SHADOWS - A dark black and white art book collection of personal digital horror paintings.
SCARY SKETCHES - A look behind the scenes at my traditional pencil, ink and marker sketches and illustrations that go into each detailed digital Photoshop painting, as well as showcasing more rough and early concept art. Other things that keep me busy are releasing new artwork on my Patreon and social media channels, making videos & tutorials for my YouTube Channel, updating my Online Store, Etsy, Society6, Redbubble, INPRNT & Gumroad, and sharing more about my art creation process online.

Amazing artwork, gotta watch you man!
Yo I love your art
Thanks so much!
..not only did she find endless inspiration throughout his transformative journey and in constant awe of his many achievements, but she found herself most intrigued with way his presence gave her peace or the promise of kindness in his eyes whilst surrounded by terrifying cruelties - so she stayed a moment longer to speak in gratitude before wandering along the growling abyss..
Whenever I visit your wonderfully prolific site, I play The Enigma TNG remix of the Resident Evil theme. It fits your glorious artwork so well!
Your portfolio is just packed with some of the best creatures I've seen, not to mention some very nice traditional pieces!
Thanks so much! Feel free to check out more at www.austenmengler.com :)
