Can nationalism be compatible with liberalism?
Can nationalism be redeemed from chauvinist tribalist usage to be compatible with liberal philosophical perspective? By liberalism I am not referring to the narrow American form of the term referring to centrist or centre-left politics or the pejorative usage of it in the United States as many English-speakers reading this may be from the US so I am calling that out. I am using the definition that refers to liberalism as a broad political philosophy with the idea of rights of people both as individuals and in associations of individuals freely choosing to associate. Since I am a liberal in that definition and am interested in the history of nationalism, I have figured that I may be able to offer a valuable analysis on the matter, though given this has been written this in a short time I can't guarantee that it will be of the best quality.
