Lodoss is similarly inspired by D&D as well as Zelda AFAIK, so I can see where you're coming from!

You don't find much new Deedlit art anymore, this is a nice surprise. Well done, too.

I like the details in the folds of Deed's dress. Good job. :) Lodoss was one of my first and favorite animes.

Thank you! To me, Lodoss (in particular the OVA) stood the test of time and I still find it the hallmark of the fantasy anime genre. Funny how it all started with a simple DnD campaign! :D (Big Grin)

Definitely. The OVA was quality content, but the tv series expanded upon the original novel more. If the tv series could have had the animation quality of the OVA it would have been alot better, but they were both good productions. I have the OVA OST; the music stands the test of time too. I even had custom t-shirts made at one point; I was a pretty big fan. The armor designs were really good; I liked Emperor Beld.

I've made Lodoss fanarts myself in the past, but that was many years ago, before I even joined this site. I tell myself occasionally that I should make more, but I never get around to it. I haven't been doing fanart like I used to, so I wouldn't know where to start. Most people just choose the most popular characters like Deedlit, Pirotess, or Ashram, but I'm not sure if I'd want to do that or not....plus there are other shows I could easily choose from too. 80s to early 90s had some of the best anime. It's nothing like today, where everything is a clone of something else.

I remember having some issues with Spark and co. in the beginning, but found myself warmed up to them by the end of the series. Animation quality dipping was really obvious, though I can't really blame them for cutting some corners with the TV budget. It's nice knowing you have been a big fan of the series. Did you saw it on VHS? I've only seen a little of it on TV and only got around to the BDs wayyyy after.

I guess you could do one on Kashu or Shiris and Orson together since they're usually shafted from the main cast. Some of my favorite series are from the 80s~90s so I definitely see where you're coming from. There are still a couple of good series off the fantasy genre in the 00s IMO. The Twelve Kingdoms is a wonderful take on eastern fantasy (with character designs by Yamada Akihiro, who did the Lady of Pharis manga), The Heroic Legend of Arslan got adapted for the second time and of course there's Berserk as well (but everyone would be better off reading the manga instead).
[EDIT]: I forgot about Drifters! Great anime adapted from the manga of the same name with common fantasy elements such as elves, orcs and dwarves, but the main attraction are the historical figures from all periods from Scipio and Hannibal from the Punic Wars to Japanese WWII soldiers dragged into the world to form a apocalyptic scenario.

The tv series had it's shining moments, and the soundtrack was also very good. Actually, there were some episodes that were very well animated and the designs were crisper and had more personality, or the color palettes were more vibrant. An example would be the episode where they have the banquet at night in their hidden base before the big battle tomorrow. It's a romantic episode and happens towards the end of the show.

As for when I saw it, actually, I came upon Lodoss completely by chance. I was in a music store many years ago, and saw the tv series dvd boxset. It wasn't even in the section it was supposed to be, I think, since I was where the music cds were, and I saw the box art, liked it, and just bought the set on the spot with no previews, no knowledge of what Lodoss was (hadn't even seen the OVA), no nothing. I kinda have a sixth sense when it comes to anime sometimes; I just know I'm going to like it. Same thing happened with Evangelion. After renting the VHS and watching just 3 episodes I knew it was for me, and bought the dvd boxset. Mind you, this was during a time when VHS was still the standard and DVD was barely coming in, so my ability to watch anime back in those days would have been dramatically reduced by today's standards. There wasn't any youtube or streaming sites (legal or otherwise) back then either, so anime was actually pretty scarce, and there wasn't a proper section for it in most video stores (which are now a thing of the past themselves).

It all really makes me feel old, and I'm only in my mid 30s. I've been around long enough to see how anime slowly progressed and launched itself into western media and syndicated programming. Now we're buying it up like hotcakes and the Japanese are all too happy to give us licenses to market it. If a series is available to watch in a hybrid format, I will usually sample both, or multiple languages. In the case of Evangelion, it was also dubbed in Spanish and French, and both versions had character, personality and inflections that weren't possible in English or Japanese.

Getting off topic, but anyways, Lodoss was one of my first proper exposures to anime. Of  course, there was Sailor Moon on weekdays during grade school, but I didn't really get into anime until sometime around my junior year of high school. It sort of had to snowball first; I didn't get immediately into it even though I've had exposure to it decades in advance.

Shiris and Orson are pretty unique in how they're handled in the ova versus the tv series. The ova sets them up better as a loyal team, but the tv makes an attempt to romantically pair them. Of course, they had to reintroduce the characters after the Ghim arc, as that's where the tv series rewrites the OVA to that point. Anything after that in the OVA is considered an alternate reality, with the tv series being canon. If nothing else, the OVA became the backstory or prequel, and I guess I can accept that, even if aspects of the OVA plot were better.

I've heard of all the shows you mentioned and watched the original Arislan. That's another show with a decent OST also. My favorite song I remember is Kutsuato no Hana. I can remember years later that some of the Lodoss songs had that same ballad-type sound with the strings, flutes, etc, so it made it easier to like the Lodoss music. I also have some of the comics and Deedlit's Tale novels.

I'll end with Drifters. Me and a friend of mine started to watch that recently together and it did initially seem interesting, but we both agree we cannot continue to watch it for moral, religious reasons. I'll leave it at that.
