Star Trek V: The Maremallow by AtomicGreymon Star Trek V: The Maremallow by AtomicGreymon
Just a weird idea I had while watching this earlier tonight. For anyone unfamiliar with the film (and perhaps even some of you who are, as clarity definitely wasn't this movie's forté, lol) the basic premise behind the original scene was that Dr. McCoy, knowing how "by-the-book" Spock is, sabotaged the Enterprise computer's article on camping out and replaced "marshmallow" with "marsh melon", trying to fool Spock into thinking the confections were actually an exotic type of melon. In this version, he's trolling both Spock and Rarity.

Although "Star Teek V: The Final Frontier" is terrible, I couldn't wait to see you do another alt. scene featuring the infamous Uhara dance with Rarity saying "Of all the worst things that could happen, is this.. THE. WORST. POSSIBLE. THING!!" And 2 audio clips of Spike and Scootaloo shouting "NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!" That would be incredible of you doing that.

I like this, but can someone please tell me why Star Trek 5 is so bad? I really like it. I like the dialogue and the humor, and I guess epic and cheesy things appeal to me. I like the 80'sness of it too, and I don't expect great special effects from an old movie, so I can understand them not being good enough at the time but it doesn't matter very much from my perspective. My taste in Star Trek movies/films must seem weird, because I've watched The Wrath of Khan and it really bored me ^^; and I knew Spock wasn't permanently dead.

Maybe I'm letting people who hate what I like get to me ^^; Again...

It isn't that the movie doesn't have its strong points; but plot just isn't one of them, lol. It's not about effects, as effects don't make or break a movie for me. Some of my favourite sci-fi flicks are incredibly old, some as far back as from the late 1920s; and some of my most hated are among the newest, supposedly with the "best" effects. Although, even taking into account the time ST:V was made, the effects were actually quite poor. Paramount just didn't give them the money needed for the effects that time around.

Personally, what I liked most about Star Trek V was the interaction between Kirk, Spock & McCoy. I can't think of any movie or episode where the relationship between the three was played out better than in this film. The camping scene was actually one of the high points of the movie for me.

Star Trek V's score was also among the best of any Star Trek film, to date. It may even be the best, although that kind of thing is highly subjective. They may not have had the money for effects, but they sure got their money's worth out of Jerry Goldsmith.

I liked those elements too, the interaction and the musical score, I thought both were really great. I think the settings are two things I really liked, both Yosemite national park and Nimbus III's endless desert. The planet at the center of the galaxy did just look like outback America (don't know where exactly)...

So what didn't work with the plot? "God" being at the center of the galaxy rather than the center of the universe? I thought it was gutsy to take a subject like religion on the way they did.

That thing wasn't God, though. Q is much closer to being a god than that creature was; and the existence of species like Q, the Organians, and others in the Trek Universe would make recognizing an actual creator being (if one even existed) pretty difficult, if not impossible. But that thing at the centre of the galaxy was just another non-corporeal alien (of whom Kirk encountered many), probably imprisoned there by its own species since it was obviously psychotic. Since the species is obviously quite powerful, they probably established the barrier themselves to contain it.

I'm no great fan of religion in Star Trek, but if someone is seeking that out I usually suggest Deep Space Nine.

So... it's just another cliched evil alien entity? Star Trek 5 came out in 1989, so was Q invented yet for TNG?

:iconsiskoplz::iconsaysplz:DS9? What show is that? =p

Q first appeared in the series premiere of The Next Generation, which aired in September 1987.

And yeah, it was just another alien. It wasn't even that powerful, as far as those energy creatures go. It wasn't able to reach the Enterprise orbiting the planet, since it told them to "bring the ship closer"; and the Klingon ship's torpedoes managed to at least injure it.

It's weird watchng :iconq-plz:, I'm not sure if John De Lancie is more famous for that or for being Discord now. To be honest though, I've only watched him recently because of Discord. It'd be cool to get more famous actors and people like that on the show for all us geeky types.

I don't want to argue about it, but I'm glad I can just watch something and enjoy it for what it is. It's only a movie, after all.

Oh, I think Mr. De Lancie will always be more famous for his role as Q than Discord. As much as I love Friendship is Magic, I don't see it outlasting Star Trek in the public consciousness. In the here and now there's more talk of Discord, as FiM is quite recent and his appearances on TNG are long over; but 40 years from now it'll be Star Trek people are still watching.
