010 - Old 3D work by Athey 010 - Old 3D work by Athey
This is sooo old it's not even funny... like.. over a year and a half old... probably older..

But someone pointed out that I do have my thing on DA listed as a '3D Modeler' and am lacking any sort of 3D art in my gallery - heh...
So I'm reposting a couple oldies.

All my recent stuff has been for the game I'm working on and I can't post any of it till the game is out so :P

3dsmax and photoshop

I don't understand why people like it so much... I mean, I do on some parts, but I don't get why so many people say they like the textures when the textures are totally horrible... meh - oh well.

extremely well model! my only critt in that more work on the "abs" texture, and why oh why does it look like the face is 3000 polies?

other than that this look like a really well model! :D
Athey Featured By Owner Nov 8, 2010  Professional Digital Artist
lol - well, thanks. Although, this model is from 2004, so it's a bit... old. lol. Face isn't that dense, but you're seeing the wirefreame for the hair through it as well, so it's extra messy to see what's going on. And yeah - my texture skills were still significantly lacking so the texture on the abs is rather pathetic.

the sorta ring around the leg is really standing out, the shoes could look better and the jacket's wrinckles as well, but I'd be glad to make a character like that XD I guess it's all about practice and it makes me wonder how long you had practiced 3D when you made this guy?
Athey Featured By Owner Sep 26, 2009  Professional Digital Artist
lol... well I made this model back in 2004, so its been a while.

Athey Featured By Owner May 8, 2009  Professional Digital Artist
I wrote a tutorial a while back that goes through the whole process of modeling and texturing a character. This character is in a different style, but the same techniques are used on both -
sin108 Featured By Owner May 9, 2009
thanks i will look it up on your page if you don't mind me asking is it hard to modeling character like how long did it take you to get good
Athey Featured By Owner May 11, 2009  Professional Digital Artist
I would say it took me a very very long time to get good... But I started in 10th grade using 3D Studio 4 for DOS, and had absolutely no tutorials or books to reference.
sin108 Featured By Owner May 11, 2009
wow that must have hard well i have a lot of work a to do them i really lover 3d art and i know that i want to do it for a living so are there any pointer or any software i should try
Athey Featured By Owner May 12, 2009  Professional Digital Artist
The two most widely used 3d apps in the gaming industry are 3dStudioMax and Maya. Both are very expensive programs, but they also both have student / personal learning editions. The Maya PLE is actually free to download and use without a time trial restriction. The only limitation is that all renders have a big watermark on them.

If you're serious about aiming to do 3D Art for a living, you should try to learn one/both of those apps.

There are free 3d apps out there - the widest used one is called Blender. Some people swear by it, and it's free. The problem is that no one in a professional setting uses it, so if you learn it, it won't do you any good when it comes to getting a real industry job.

I don't know if the latest releases of 3dsmax have a free student version or not. I know it's got 30-day trials, so you can always download that and see if you like it at all.

You can also look for a program called gmax. It's 3dstudio max version 4 or 5... don't remember. Anyways, Autodesk basically put it out for free and I believe you can still download it and use it for free.

Of course it's version 4 or 5, and we're on version um... 11, I think. lol. So it's OLD.

People like it because it is a 3D model, I mean, when "3D" first came out it was like the most amazing thing ever xD even with the first playstation or n64. And looking at this now I still think its good despite all the advancements of 3D art. I mean people still marvel at conceptual art more than the actual gameplay
