Neat piece, I love how you put the other characters in her cape and shaded them red.  see you removed the lines in this piece and decided to rely on shading to capture the details. This is something I have yet to explore in my own artwork. It looks great here.

Hey Athena, long time no comment!

I'll get straight to the critique as always.

Your work has improved a lot over the years. Your techniques are effective and your characters have great form. It's getting to the professional level. However, as good as this looks, I honestly think this work lacks style and it's not very interesting. It's too similar to the official work and even works by other artists. I don't know what contest you're competing in, but if you lose this may very well be one of the reasons.

In my opinion, there are a ton of great artists, but in the vast sea of them, only a few will surface. Those who do are the ones with a style. All the top professionals in the industry have distinctive styles and are known for it. It's easy to be good, but to be good and have a style that people will recognize you by, is not.

I'm not saying your work is generic or that mimicking is bad. Actually, being able to imitate styles is a skill sought by many companies. I do encourage you to experiment more and maybe even use less references from official sources.

Finding a style is a long journey and it's something I'm struggling with at the moment (yes, my work is generic), but it will pay off. After attending several presentations from animation studios and professionals, I learned that what companies look for is seeing "you" in your work.

I think you could have spent more time with the dragon and sharpen the details just slightly more. I know atmosphere perspective applies, but that dragon is really looking mushy and unfinished. You could have added some minor highlights to the scales and details to the underside as there is fire lighting it.

Well, you may not agree with me but that's fine. Nevertheless, great work!

I think style should come after you learn all the foundation

Just to be clear, I wasn't implying that the foundation should be skipped or that style should come before it. It's called foundation for a reason.

Style can develop right from the start or during the learning process. It all depends on a number of factors. Ideally, one should learn all the foundations, but that doesn't really happen all the time.

I do believe that you have learned much of your foundations and are on your way to truly finding a style. It's good that you know what you're aiming for and you can take criticism.

Best of luck with your future works.

This is amazing! I love the design of the dark past behind Lucina in her cape :)

Second place is still amazing! And the leader is nothing I would feel bad losing to. You made a great piece that really makes me want to try a little harder. Great job man.

I don't know what competition you entered but this is incredible and deserves to win.
Just wow! This looks like official art for a poster or something.
