First Elves - Color by asynjur First Elves - Color by asynjur
Hadn't intended to color this, but I started working on it as an experiment in trying to use layers and liked the way it was came out. Actually, I couldn't stop fiddling with it, and finally had to just upload it before I went insane! But there's still a lot of stuff I'd change, didn't shade under the ear of the first elf, jaw line too dark, etc.

Something about the color reminds me of an old photograph or painting, or perhaps it was an old style of print, something from the 1940s maybe, can't quite put my finger on it...

For more explanation about the elves, please see the sketch [link]

I have to admit that I like the black-and-white version more. But that's probably just me.

I often like people's sketches better than the colored works. They really should be considered as two completely different artworks. Sorry for the late reply, I don't do much with dA anymore.

Wow, so you put it in color... Only one question. Why is left elf naked? Or does it only look like it is?
But... Just an awesome picture! It looks so realictic, and so unreal...

I agree with you, it has that "old photo" feel to it, it's soft and muted, and it's like you captured this lovely little moment. Beautifully done, the hair is incredible!

Thanks so much! I actually colored it in light, almost pastel like tones... Then increased the contast and saturation at the end, giving the browns more depth and changing the whole tone of the pic, I was really happy with it.. I just wish I had more time for art, the gallery has been standing stagnant for a month...

This is so sweet! The soft colors and shading really add to the warm tone of this. I love their hair- with the subtle highlights. The style reminds me of old story-book illustrations.
Nicely done! :D

IIiiif you did this with a mouse, I'm going to have to kick you. Actually, even if you didn't, I'll kick you anyway, since it's so soft and lovely and fitting of the subject. It's gentle and homey, instead of plasticy and cold.

Thank you!

Well, I draw with a mouse because that's what I know how to do... I taught myself to draw with a mouse several years ago when I was heavy into making cyberpets. More recently I bought a tablet, I tried it a couple times but it didn't come naturally, it would be learning another new skill and I wasn't up to that... I kept going on to the toolbars in the program where I couldn't draw, and it hurt to hold the button down.... So, for now it's in the closet!

I might find it more useful if there's a way to set it up so it uses relative positions (like a mouse) instead of absolute, but I don't know if there is... Also, it might be that PSP doesn't really utilize a tablet well, maybe it will work better for me if I start using another program instead, I don't know. So I might try it again in the future, but right now it's just easier for me to go with what I know, LOL!

Oow, thanks for the fav! I was really happy with the coloring, had a lot of fun doing it, too. When I went to put the final touches on I kept fiddling with it, though... I always do that, I just can't stop fussing with things. I saved like 70 total versions of the pic as I was working on it. A friend of mine happened to come on ICQ, I said I was working on something and sent her the pic, and she said, "Yes, do go ahead and upload it now, it's great!" So I did. Otherwise I'd probably still be working on it!

There's something about how the final color came out, it reminds me of old photos - before they had the technology for color photography, they used to just add color to a black and white picture sometimes, just put a splash of color over the black and white image. I remember some very old family portaits like that. But it's kind of funny since you wouldn't really see elves in a photo from like 1940. Well, it strikes me as funny, anyway!

Yeah it does kinda remind me of an old time photo, along with the fact that the tones are very soft and earthy, almost like a layer of brown dust has been ushered over it. You did a great job and it deserves more than just one fave.

Yay! It finally opened up for me...! XD

This is fantastic! I'm so happy that you colored it, it turned out really well. The colors are so soft, and the shading flows so naturally. I especially like their hair -- the different colors make it look more natural. The brunet turned out particularly well. Although I must say that the shine on the blonde's hair is excellent. :)

Over all just a fantastic picture! So warm and pretty... perfect for a kiss

I kind of started with the brown hair, and I was so happy with it, that's when I decided to finish the whole picture. I just had a lot of fun coloring this. I don't know why it's so much easier to get myself to work on something on the computer (and risk eye strain!) - rather than to just sit down and sketch on paper. But I am really hoping to do more of both in the next few months!

There's something about how the final color came out, after I ran it through the clarifying filter and saturated the color and stuff... the look of the pic reminds me of those old photographs. You've probably never seem them, but before they had the technology for color photography, they used to just add color to a black and white picture, just put a splash of color over the black and white image. I remember some very old family portaits like that. (They looked kind of like those Turner colorized movies, well, you probably haven't seen that either!) But it's kind of funny since you wouldn't really see elves in a photo from 1940 or something... I think I'll add something about that to the artists comments on the pic...
