Shadow of Beauty: Ch 1- Helia the Slayer

Helia was a slayer. She came from a long line of slayers in her family, but presently she was the only one in the trade. Her father had grown too old and had been injured too many times by the profession to continue so she had taken up the mantle. Though her mother had not been pleased with her choice of vocation, due to its dangerous, wandering nature, her father had supported her decision and even seemed prideful that she'd followed in his footsteps. Helia was the eldest daughter in a family with no sons. She had thick, long, wavy red hair that flashed like copper penny in the sun and striking blue eyes to compliment. Standing at five-foot eleven, she was tall for her gender with a fit, muscled body; a must in her profession of killing monsters. She had a classic beauty in her features but did nothing to flaunt it. Makeup and other frivolities were unknown to her. Women in the position of slayer were unheard of, but Helia had a killer's edge and huntress's instinct that would've

Chapter 14 - Chalsandra and Lapis

“Chalsandra?” I growled, my fur standing on end. “Leaf, is this bitch really your sister?” Needless to say, I was quite pissed at the situation. My new in-laws were just saved from a cage and this chick’s lightning hurts. “It is…” Leaf’s voice sounded as if he was lost. He looked between me and the older elf teen before speaking to her in the same defeated tone. “Chalsandra, what are you doing? Why are you here?” “And why the hell did you attack my family!” Reposa adds. An aura started to form around her, her anger growing alongside mine. “Oh, little brother… can’t a big sis just pop in to see how her favorite sibling is doing?” Chalsandra’s voice dripped with an condescending tone. I don’t think any of us believed this, even for a moment. That said, taking a quick look at Leaf, I wasn’t sure about him at the moment. Seeing his older sister seemed to have shaken him. I know he looks up to her, but to have her attack you and your friends, that would be hard on any family

Viking pray

Lo, there do I see my father. Lo, there do I see my mother, and my sisters, and my brothers. Lo, there do I see the line of my people, back to the beginning! Lo, they do call to me. They bid me take my place among them, in the halls of Valhalla! Where the brave may live forever!

Born of the Land and Sea

Ch. 3 Mother landChristina waited for her mother as she began her story, "Well my daughter, a long time ago, I had a friend who was magical in every way and she was most true and brave. However, she also loved your father as much as I; even though I did not know until too late. She had saved your father from a terrible shipwreck and it turned out your father was confused who his savior was. She sacrificed many things to be with him since she saved his life from that horrific accident and grew to love him dearly upon her first days on land. Your father loved her and treated her with utmost respect. For she was beautiful, with moonshine hair...

Born of the Land and Sea

Ch. 9 Mother LandSea gulls lulled around the ship and there was no sight of anything but the wavy sea and the blue horizon. There had been no sign of Christina and no alerts had been sent from any of the other vessels. Margrethe ordered 7 other ships to travel all corners of the seas to find her lost daughter. One afternoon after another unsuccessful search, she decided to spend time watching the sunset from the bow of the ship. She glanced at the sun's final rays turning the vast sails above her into pigments of rich orange and the clouds heading in the direction of the sun. Her pinned hair had slowly fallen across her eyes and she gently...

PrologueMargrethe softly gazed at the horizontal line that divided the sea and sky where gray seemed to blend them together. She watched her friend, the beautiful and courageous Lenia, in her mermaid form once again, vanish beneath the calming tide, leaving no trace and a few splashes. Lenia had almost died from a sacrificing spell, a spell that made her a temporary human and live on land as a human. But after Margrethe's marriage to Prince Christopher, whom they both loved, she realized she could not destroy it, despite all of her efforts to woo him, and decided to sacrifice her love for their peace. Margrethe and Prince Christopher had a...

Chapter Ten: A Note

Overhead, the sky roiled with dark clouds. A storm threatening to break. Winds whipped her hair and clothing around, forcing her to squint. As she sought shelter or a path down, she spied Jon on another barren hilltop, far from her. For a moment, she thought her eyes were playing tricks. But when she blinked, he was still there, trying to shout something. But as much as Mari strained to hear over the whistling gale, she couldn’t make out any words. Perhaps if she were closer, it would be easier. After a moment, she picked out the straightest path down, using her hands to balance on the steep slope. At the bottom, the gully was thick with briars, disorienting her bearings. Among the thorns, three twisting paths were discernable, but they might as well have been the same. She was lost before even beginning. As she hesitated, she became aware of Crevan, where from she didn’t know. He said nothing but instead darted headlong into the thicket before she could react. Her decision

Chapter Three: Her Last Chance

Mari knew she was dreaming, no matter how real the sun shining between the gaps in the tree canopy looked and felt. She pushed aside tangled vines and shrubs, uncertain of where she was or her direction. This wasn’t a part of the forest she knew. Suddenly she thought she heard her name called. At first, she believed it was her brother. But the voice was so faint it could have been male or female. Nonetheless, she raced in that direction.  Only to find herself surrounded by thick fog. When she looked back, she couldn’t see the tree line. “Jon?”  Her only answer was a cold breeze. The smoky whiteness felt too quiet. The ground felt strange too, no grass or plants at all. She bent down and scooped up what she at first thought was soil but was too loose and dry.  “Jonathon?”    No answer.  “Anyone?”   A shiver crawled down the back of her neck as she whipped around. The pressure of an unknown, unseen gaze.   “Who’s there?”    Silence. She wanted to run back into the forest, where she

Chapter Seven: A New Place

Mari tried to rub warmth back into her chilled arms as the wagon sloshed through the sodden forest. Beneath her dangling feet, the road receded as each muddy back-spray of wheels took her farther and farther from everything familiar. The grey shadows of trees stretched long and deepened in the encroaching evening. It had only been a fortnight since she’d set out, and she was already damp, tired, and resenting the whole idea of travel. Hardly the glorious start they tell you about in stories. Yesterday the clouds burst their seams with the sunrise and it had rained all day and all night. Hard. Although she wore her thick woolen cloak with the hood pulled up, and with a luxurious tree cover overhead she had still been soaked within minutes. Even now, her clothes still clung to her body and made every movement difficult and itchy. She’d thought of changing into her spare set upon boarding the wagon. But even without her present company, the notion of doing it outdoors felt improper and

Faylen - Ch 1

- Chapter One - Mother         My name is Faylen, and I am a dragon. A gold dragon, to be specific. I live in the woods with Mother—who's also a gold dragon—even though she rarely shows her true form. She prefers to live as an elf. I can change my form, too. And not just into an elf, I can change myself into animals. According to Mother, most dragons don't learn to polymorph until they're much older than I am, but she says I have a natural gift for the art transformation. She says I'll make for a talented druid one day. I hope she's right, because I want to be just like her when I grow up.         We live alone, deep in the heart of a wi...

The Fairy Suitor

Each day, a fair young maiden A blacksmith’s comely daughter Was sent out to a forest stream To fill a pitcher with water Water lapping at her feet Sunshine on her tresses Weeds and reeds along the brook Tugging at her dresses Time and time again she’d stay Longer than she needed The warnings that her father gave Never had she heeded “Linger not beside the brook, For the folk who live there Would surely take you far away Without a second care.” The maid she didn’t listen, She liked it by the stream Where she watched the sunlight glisten As gold was wont to gleam There down by the stream there lived A member of the fairies The sort of whom a prudent maid Would do well to be wary Each day he watched her Coming to the stream Sighing and meandering In an absent dream He thought she was the loveliest Among the human folk So, he resolved to court her And take her for his own One day when she came fetching Before her he appeared He tried to reassure her That he need not be feared He

XXII. Marrow-fed Fire

Eira bent to remove her shoes. She cut down Alaric’s hanging corpse, then she began to dance. She sang the song to rouse the dead, and quickly, Alaric’s body rose like a puppet on a string. As Eira danced around the clearing, she beckoned the corpse to follow suit. It did, a gruesome sight with its purple face still dressed in priestly garb. Eira giggled, and sang on as she twirled around the fire. As we dance around this fire Let this be a funeral pyre For the mother who died for me For the life that was not to be For all the lives my father stole For every act that damned his soul For deeds from which he can’t atone I offer up his flesh and bone! At these words, the corpse danced straight into the blazing fire, and immediately caught alight. It twisted and flailed in the flames, but did not move from them. As Eira watched, the flames consumed the corpse, reducing it to ash and bone fragments. She stopped dancing then, and threw dirt over the fire, dousing it. No one would find

XIV. Blood in Braille

Early the next morning, just as dawn was breaking, Alaric went to visit Gwen one final time. For her impending execution, he wore white robes to show his purity and holiness. The irony made him chuckle as he unlocked the shed. Inside, he found Gwen slumped against the wall, sound asleep, with a faint smile on her face. Perhaps she was dreaming of more pleasant times. Then he noticed that she wasn’t holding the baby in her arms, as she usually was. He looked around. The shed was small, with no place to hide anything, even something as small as an infant. Where was the baby? The door had been locked, and he had the only key. Where could it have gotten to? He reached down and grasped Gwen’s shoulder, roughly shaking her awake. She opened her eyes and shook her head, before looking up at him inquisitively. “Where’s the baby?” Gwen blinked, then looked around, as if expecting to see it somewhere. When she didn’t, she grinned. How dare she. Alaric grabbed her other shoulder and shook
