Leather Helmet

My second Helmet.

Using the same base as the previous one, I made a more sturdy protection for thee damaged head of mine.

Two rods of steel are riveted on the inside to the lateral protections. The back scales are held together with little leather straps, which is not satifying. I should have use a large piece of thin leather and fix the scales on it. I made ear holes for with the previous helmet made me a little deaf.
The inside is fur again, bur removeable and doubled with thin leather.

Finaly a chin strap made the whole really fixed to the head.

A really cool helmet!  I love the idea of a removable liner!  Hard to tell a modern hard hat is the crown!

Thanks ^^

The base helmet I used in't a recent one. It is a real miner helmet. As for removable liner, this the way most helmets I know are worn.
Can't think what would happen without one...

Is it just me or does this look really similar to the Rohan helmets in LOTR? =P (Razz)

I must disagree with you.
The only similarities between Rohirrhim designs and this one are the celtic inspiration and the proeminent leather. Each one of them hasa horse related theme blended in the design, and most have a proeminent crest. The majority of helmets seen in the movies are made from brass covered with leather (or cast resin for figurants).

Mine is derived from a miner helmet, taking inspiration from greek and celtic patterns.
I love this helmet! Do you have one like it for sale? It would complement my RenFaire outfit.

Hi and thanks for the nice comment ^^

Halas, I don't have a spare to sell. But I can make one.
Please send me a note and I will see what I can offer.

What don't you like about the scales, are they not functional for protection? They look really nice in the picture.

Theses scales are attached with littles horizontal and vertcal straps, wich renders the whole back of the head very aered.
The thing I don't like about them is the way they move and get stuck sometimes with the scarf.

Retrospectively, I would have fixed them on larges vertical bands.

That would hold them there and give the same look when worn, wouldn't it. :) If you still had them you could still do that.

Will do.

When I will find the time to do so ^^

This is astonishingly well made. I have worked in leather a little. I've made wallets and belts with celtic knotwork, etc. What I am saying is I appreciate the quality and beauty of your creations, and how much love and hard work goes into it. :rose:

Qh, the praises are well-deserved. It's gratifying to see someone taking the time to craft things with such care and attention to detail.

I'm grateful you took a look at my gallery as well.

Take care.

These are fantastic dude, i'm really impressed. I've toyed with the idea of trying to make a boiled leather helmet, but I think it may be much simpler to do something like this. What thickness leather have you used?
Astanael's avatar
Thanks a lot for your comment, you're very welcome ^^

The base is a real base miner helmet, already formed. It is around 3mm thick and already treated. Then I use croupon 3-5mm leather, assembled with rivets or couture and dyed with neat oil. The base is black, my additions are brown.

Lacing was made with simples round shoes laces.

To make the base, it is possible to assemble a 4-way parts with couture. I've made it for a tricorne. Will find the owner to take the picture I forgot.
Not entirely sure what Couture is? I was wondering about making the base from two pieces of boiled leather sewn together, which would give a joining point for attatching a crest or some kind.

Oh my bad, by couture I mean sewing.
Seems my multitasking skills are decreasing.

Your idea will work, to my opinion. I don't have picture of the base helmet but it is made of two formed pieces sewn together.

Whoa, this is really awesome...
