Elder Things

"Six feet end to end, three and five-tenths feet central diameter, tapering to one foot at each end. Like a barrel with five bulging ridges in place of staves. Lateral breakages, as of thinnish stalks, are at equator in middle of these ridges. In furrows between ridges are curious growths – combs or wings that fold up and spread out like fans. . . which gives almost seven-foot wing spread. Arrangement reminds one of certain monsters of primal myth, especially fabled Elder Things in the Necronomicon."

- H.P. Lovecraft, At the Mountains of Madness

After reading the novel and mastering a long follow-up campaign on theses poor "guys", I now deeply empathize with the Elders, for their kin had the most tragic, cruel and sad fate of the Mythos greater races, Their scientific approach and struggling, 'though extraneous to our feeble morals, is quite admirable given the circumstances. Will we be able to act with such fierce determination upon our extinction or will we disappear like a old fart bubble in a pool of our own putrid and toxic stupidity ?

While the Great Race walk among us today in borrowed human bodies doing research, the Old Race are hostile. Their wiping out that Antartica expedition (off-stage) leaving the bodies unfit for burial !

They avoid earth now, thriving on other worlds (see Dreams in the Witch House) but earth had a 'wrongness" that in the end ...

And what humans have done with most of the species they met, hum ? Dissecting them. That's what.
I'm not blaming the Elders, they were just scientists from a forgotten ages, brought back to live in an hostile world, fiercely attacked by unknown yelling bipeds and bitten by furry quadrupeds.
They did their best, okay ?

The scientific approach might help us survive.  After all, through discovery, we already know how to subdue Cthulhu...hit him with a boat.

Well... the scholars disagree on this point, that it was indeed the Great Cthulhu himself. Some argue that it was merely a star spawn, a lesser manifestation of an entity not made from matter as we know it.

Have you played the "Beyond the mountains of madness" campaign of Chaosium ?

Nope, but I have read the original Lovecraft stories.

Apparently, H.P. might not have counted on advances in technology.  I'm sure if we could build a Jaeger, we could stop an Elder God.  After all, Gipsy Danger could swing a very large boat as a weapon.  And with the neural bridge, the pilots only go half as insane!

I think you missed the point on the whole "Non-Euclidean cyclopean entity defying time and space". Blind faith in technology can only lead you so far.

Who said anything about blind faith in technology?  You need strength of will and high drift compatibility, otherwise the Jaeger's just a multi-ton paperweight.  The Breach itself defied time and space as H.P. Lovecraft knew it.  And the Kaiju were not pushovers.  And if you saw PR:U, not everyone got out of the first Kaiju war unscathed...

PR is not lovecraftian. That is a different narrative.
