Princess Twilight Coronation Portrait

Badge Awards

Commission for Infrasonicman featuring Princess Twilight in a coronation portrait.
For more information, see the version with annotations here: [HC/AU] The Regalia of Princess Twilight Sparkle
Update: You can see it framed here: Framed: Princess Twilight Portrait (by AM)

Done with the intend of direction towards the classical royal portraits you might've seen here and there. Although with a personal touch to it of course, oh and pony.

It's always interesting to try and find that balance in colour scheme, when referencing an existing style, without having the same character colours. I don't think there's a lot of purple people in the old portraits.

Behold, Behold! It's a princess!!!

Vision: My opinion is spot on for an old style coronation portrait as I had picked up on this with looking and its energy did give me a vision of portraits of the Kings and Queens of England mainly. Well done.

Originality: Ponies not very original but this theme is original. I have not come across anything in this fashion or theme before. The energy is also unique to this artist which adds to the originality. Nicely done.

Technique: The level of detail is as I have come to enjoy from this artist. The background is very nicely done with enough to give the feel of the classic portrait of old royalty from our own world such as the red carpet, the pedestal with the crown and scepter, the style of curtains, the wall paneling, and the flowers adds to this energy. The detail on the metal pedestal is wonderful with its mix of shadow and light, the red pillow has wonderful detailing on the tassels and the shading for me gives a nice texture of velvet. Wonderful lighting adds to the feeling of the older style lighting.

Twilight is wonderfully done with her royal shoes and the outfit and new crown is very fitting for what a Queen of England would had worn, in my opinion. The shirt nicely shaded for the ruffles and creases of the sleeves and the lower part gently falling down in an elegant flow down in a dress behind her which is added to by the shading and highlights. The sash is a beautiful royal blue and with the shading and shine brings the feel of silk to my fingertips just looking at it.

I like the metal and the necklace looks well done another style seen worn by old royalty in paintings. The robe is a lovely purple and by the shading feels fluffy and soft with the white part as well brings to me the feel of fur. The bows are a nice touch looking like a soft satin material. The second necklace looks very lovely and dignified for a Princess. Her mane is up in a fashion to fit the royal standard for portraits looking very neat and kept. Cute little earrings as well nice touch.

The crown is well done it has a nice texture to it showing the solid metal build for the structure and the center a softer material as is the outer fur that rests on the head for comfort. The arch is very nicely done with Twilight's star cutie mark in the center. Also the window is done very well with a nice faint image of Canterlot outside so we can tell what's there but doesn't detract from the focal point. The shading on Twilight is nicely done I like the reflection in her eyes it gives a nice feeling of warmth and depth to her eyes looking to the viewer. Excellent.

For any suggestions to improve...perhaps the center could had been a bit more rounded yet still be shaded just so to give the same fur/fluffy feel as the robe has. The current way is fine but a little bit made me slightly tiny bit think it may have been deflated by another Unicorn. So either a little more form or a little less ripples. Only if it wouldn't make it look terrible.

Impact: It brings me to think how interesting it might had gone if this had taken place of how Celestia would had approached Twilight to tell her there was one more thing needed done then this. I wonder if Rarity would had been giving history and such on the outfit and where it got started. Then again she might not or may suppose would depend on mood and if Twilight's friends would had been there. It left me thinking and having a good energy. Well done.

Overall: Excellent artwork and very well done matching the energy and style of classic royalty portraits. Only suggestion could think of would be with the purple middle of the crown maybe a bit more shape to it or less ripples if it wouldn't ruin the overall elegant flow of the picture. Very well done.

This is a glorious digital painting. I love the color scheme; the modest colors used create a regal atmosphere and gives off a similar vibe as classic paintings. I love the detail in this piece, such as the view out the window. It's good that you made the outside castle subtle so that it doesn't distract the viewer from the subject of the painting, Twilight Sparkle.

The texture in this artwork is pretty good, especially the metallic look of the crown and the gold on Twilight's hooves, and the lifelike appearance of her hair. I also like the detail in the lace of Twilight's outfit. However, the folds on the purple part of the crown look overdone and makes the fabric look too loose and lumpy.

Also, the hanging pot of flowers in the upper left looks rushed. It is an unimportant aspect of the picture, but it still doesn't look as good as the rest of the painting and would be better if it was either left out or more detailed.

The layout of the picture is nicely crafted. There's enough to look at without being too cluttered, making it a pleasant setting for Twilight Sparkle.

Overall, this is an impressive masterpiece and definitely one of the greater MLP fan artworks out there!

I can see what you are attempting with a royal portrait and it works very well. I have take. I've taken Several classes on art of the Baroque (post renaissance, 15-1600s) so I can say how to improve future royal portraits of yours, there are 4 princesses after all. First the inclusion of a column, the roman column is often used in pictures of royalty for its geometric dominance, also a phallic symbol, that shows how strong a ruler is. Second would be landscapes/hunting portraits. Look at the portraits of Anthony van dycke to see pictures of kings in the middle of the hunt or over looking their private lands, they used this to show they were active and also show off the large tracts of land they ruled over, often they had a servant in the picture as they never hunted alone. Finally there are the portraits in armor, made popular by king Henry the 8th, these portraits showed the ruler in full armor and regalia the obvious message being about their marital prowess. Your picture is amazing and I happily favorite and I hope you look back at the pictures of our rulers past in future depictions of Equestria's royalty...
P.s make a princess cadance picture she is my faves!
