Commission for TheSlorg , cover art for his story "Worlds Apart: At Eternity's End" featuring 'Apple Bloom' and 'Doug'.

Now this was an interesting one, even from the beginning. The concept of an alien planet, ripe for adventure. So many possibilities and I think I made good use of that haha.
Spend so much time playing around, trying different things out, adding stuff. Trying out colour schemes. There's so many possibilities, but at least I managed to slap myself into moving forward as well and get some needed progress.

So I basically made it a bit more complex than I needed, to be honest. Still fun though, quite the experience and hopefully the result is just as enjoyable :D

Hey there.

First of, great artwork, I was pretty amazed when I stumbled upon this one <img src="e.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/s…" width="15" height="15" alt="=)" data-embed-type="emoticon" data-embed-id="390" title="=) (Smile)"/>
So let's see what I can say about it:

The overall composition works quite well, the strongest contrast rightfully lies where the characters are located and the mountains on the right form a nice diagonal line, which draws the eye towards the two.

What I probably like best in the piece is the coloursceme. The transicions between the colors are very nicely done and they all blend together well, making it a believable environment. The characters themselfes are rendered very well too, they really blend in with the Landscape.

A few suggestions for things you could try:
It would be intersting to give a more alien colorpalette to the two humans, so they stand out more. Maybe it would add the feeling that they are new to the place.

When it comes to wide Landscapes it can also be nice to have them look into the distance. The painters of the Romanticism liked to use that effect. You could look at "Wanderer above the sea of fog" from Caspar David Friedrich as a great example.

There is one gripe I have with the piece, which is the amount of detail shown. To me it seems like less might be more here. It could use some more places without detail, so the eye can rest. I heard a pretty cool concept-artist say that you should aim for a 70 to 30% ratio, with 70% of the picture beeing rather plain and without many small details.

Anyways, overall I really like this one,
keep up the great work! <img src="e.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/s…" width="15" height="15" alt="=)" data-embed-type="emoticon" data-embed-id="390" title="=) (Smile)"/>

With the world open to us, we feel as if we can explore over that mountain, down the river or up the tree things. The perspective we are given is very clever. The planet revolving nearby really takes one's breath away as they see something so spectacular up close.

I found the clouds a little strange, something to do with their altitude and space between them seems a little unreal. (Please stick with me here) The colour of the sky is a very strong purple and pink, really odd colours for an atmosphere of a planet. (Don't hate me yet, keep reading) The flora in the area is spread with many colours that don't seem to have any particular pattern between them or any defining shapes. The blue grass, violet rocks, and aqua algae looking stuff is something really weird to see. But that's what makes this image so amazing!
By altering almost every aspect of nature, deforming it and changing it's colour it really takes away any feeling of earth that it had. This glorious drawing eats up earth and spits it back out as fantastic scenery that we can only gawk at. This drawing has really performed the 'out of this world' look to perfection. (Now do you hate me for saying those mean things?)

Although much of the foreground is alien, it is good to see some recognisable features including rocks, trees (although they are massive) and water. This keeps a small balance that I (personally) think is necessary.

Having both of the characters, Apple Bloom and Doug, sit down in the foreground, yet towered by the plants behind them really gives us the despair and helplessness they must feel to be in such an unfamiliar place.

I was about to criticise Evangel-Windrunner for giving this 5/5 for everything, but now that I have analysed it, I can do nothing but agree with her.

What can I say? An alien landscape could have been anything ranging from a barren land devoid of life to an extremely docile, colourful place. But what you have envisioned here is a perfect blend of a hostile, yet inviting landscape; the perfect beginning to a grand adventure!

I love what you have achieved with the theme. The vibrant colours in the piece perfectly suit the main characters (particularly Applebloom) of the fan fiction (fairly young of age) and make the prospect of exploring the world all the more inviting. Fantastic job with the design of the flora and general layout of the landscape, and the road into the distance is a nice touch, further contributing to the sense of adventure and a possible destination to be reached at the end of a long winding road.

The actual technique involved with the piece is also very well-executed, with great detail in the foreground, good blending towards the distance, and very elegant strokes used for the design of the local flora.

Overall, I would say that this is a fantastic work of art! I really can't find much fault with this piece. Keep up the great work!

Doug looks like a humanised Big Mac.
And like Joel from The Last Of Us.
Either way, this is a wicked landscape right here.
lol i also thought that that was Big mac! and it also made me thought of Joel!

Such an awesome and unique colour palette! I'd love to play an MMO in that world... or physically go there (that would be so cool!) Definitely achieved your aim! :)

Hmm... getting a Last of Us vibe from this. This is definitely an interesting piece, not to say amazing. I especially love how vibrant it is and the detail that went into it, along with the placement of Doug and Apple Bloom in the view of the landscape (which is also creatively done, I can definitely get an other-world vibe from it).

This is probably my favorite humanized piece that I've ever seen. It also appears that you "fully humanized" (their hair looks to be colored in 'human', more neutral, tones), which is something that I rarely, if ever, see. I love this piece!

I think of The Last of Us when I see this. I can't help it.

Beautiful work, for sure. :)

Though I humbly propose that no alien world will ever be as ripe for adventure as Barsoom.

The background is splendid as always, but I don't care much for it for Applebloom being portrayed as human.
Glad that it's just a commission.
