Apple through Dust

Woo, that was quite a different one. I kinda made at least half of this on booze... It was Applejack, though, so I had to keep going. And I've decided I'll also upload it while I'm in this state. One way to find out how that goes right?

Was taking a bit different approach again, direct colours, slightly changed anatomy, approach to hair, etc. Some of it done before, but also some twists to it. Basically me playing around with the brush and then this happened.

I like making tears... the shading is fun. Ironically this stream I made it in turned into a tear jerker at some point as well! For my timezone my last stream of 2015 heh. Glad it finished with Applejack.

See y'all at the other side eh?

The technique is quite obviously different from your usual, although the facial features are still recognizable as your style. But the vibrant colors is what immediately grabbed my attention, and I absolutely love them! I'm often torn between the subdued realistic tones and the bright saturated feast for the eyes like here, but since we're talking about colored horses, I am 100% in favor of more bright colors like these!
The awesome raw energy is still present as always. The pose and the facial expression also look very powerful. The picture immediately jumps at the viewer from your gallery page. It could be a comic book cover, a poster for a movie, a huge billboard in front of BronyCon! (Though for the latter some cleanup work is order).
The tears, clothes and hair are shaded expertly!
The significance of dust and AJ's tears is lost on me, but it still makes for a very powerful image.

Now for the nitpicking.
Firstly, I wouldn't call the picture flat, but the new technique has a lot less of your signature 3D effect, in the shading of AJ's face and hair. Also, the background, the character and the dust in the foreground could use some more separation of the planes.
Secondly, the dust looks weird. Looking at the thumbnail, I wasn't sure if it was supposed to look like holes in the photograph, random noise or something else. I don't know, maybe real-life dust can look like this, or maybe your style dictates this kind of shape, but I would suggest making a more obvious cloudy/dusty texture.
Thirdly, and this could be just me, but the composition naturally calls for some sort of vignette. I mean, the dust in the bottom does its own bit of framing the picture, but I would go for a more pronounced effect, especially given how you yourself usually do a much stronger vignette. Or wait, was that the whole point? To move away from the usual approach and standard cheap framing effects? In that case never mind

TLDR: plz draw more colorful things like this, monkey :3

This looks like a nightmare for Applejack, the land and the home she spent so long with crumbling beneath her.

I don't think you ever made their eyes this big. It's really interesting, though.

Drawn on booze? You mean you were buzzed/drunk while doing this? OMG your skills are still amazing in that state! XD

Aww… What could have happened to make this little Apple filly so darned sad? Looks like she got lost for a while there and now her pretty dress is dirty and her mane is all tousled; or perhaps she was dressed up for picture day and got into a scuffle with some bully at school (and then ran off after winning because she was afraid she'd get in trouble). No matter the reason though, I just want to reach into the frame and hug her until she's feeling better then take her home so all the ponies who love her can help her deal with it and feel better.

So regardless of all that, you did an amazing job of making little Applejack looks fantastically lovely and expressing her shame and sadness perfectly. The strong focus on her face is quite powerful, and fading off to the rest of her body, then more so to the busy yet blurry background really keeps the emphasis on her feelings. Ace job.

Thanks for sharing. Have an awesome new year and take care.
