The windows of Carousel Boutique were dark, and the moon hung high in the summer night sky, framed by four stars that grew ever closer. Sunset Shimmer smiled ruefully as she studied the glittering lights in the canvas of sky, remembering how she had to time her visits before Princess Twilight had crafted a portal all her own, to allow the homesick Sunset to come and go as she pleased. But this time was different. This time she was home to stay. Her friends at Canterlot High knew that she was missing something, something she couldn’t have while on two legs, and so she returned to Equestria, happy to be on her hooves once more.
Months had passed since her and Rarity had begun seeing each other, with Sunset accompanying Rarity on business trips so that she could vent her frustrations, but Sunset knew that their relationship was supposed to be strictly professional. Rarity was a married mare, and even though her wife, Rainbow Dash, was often away mentoring hopeful Wonderbolt Recruits, Sunset knew they were as committed to each other as the flowers were the sun. Until Rarity had confessed to Sunset one night that she had begun to harbor feelings for the orange unicorn, causing the two to form a plan to hopefully join all three mares into a relationship. And tonight was the night. Rainbow Dash was no doubt inside the Boutique, perhaps taking one of her infamous two hour showers. The two unicorns entered the building, and Sunset couldn’t help but hold her breath as the two made their way into the kitchen, waiting for Rainbow to come down.
"Rainbow, darling, are you up there?" Rarity called, smiling when she heard her wife's familiar raspy voice.
"Yeah, just washin' the cloud and mud offa me, I know my marshmallow doesn’t like it when I get the silky sheets all dirty with stuff that isn’t her~.." Rarity flushed at the remark, shutting her eyes. Sunset couldn’t help but laugh, nudging the ivory mare gently.
"You’ve got quite the handful, huh?" She smirked as Rarity waved her hoof dismissively, blowing air through her lips.
"Oh, pssh, it’s not my fault the mare I love is so wonderfully crass.. Although it is a bit disruptive in public..." she shook her head, calling back up the stairs.
"Just be down soon, I’ve something I’d like to talk to you about.." She pawed the floor nervously, and Sunset brought her into an embrace, running a hoof through her deep purple mane.
"Just breathe, Rares.. It’s all going to be ok. If your Rainbow Dash is at all like the one I know, this’ll go off without a hitch.." She reassured gently, and her eyes shut happily as Rarity pressed a small kiss to her cheek. Her hooves released Rarity from her place snug against her chest as hoofsteps descended the stairs, and Sunset offered a shy smile to Rainbow Dash, who was currently staring at the two unicorns as if somepony had been murdered in her kitchen.
"Rares..?" Dash echoed, rosey eyes taking in as much as she could. Rarity turned to face her wife, searching her face.
"So, Rarity, is this the business parter you’ve been telling me about..?" Dash asked, feathers bristling. Rarity cleared her throat, taking a hesitant step forward.
"I, yes, Rainbow, this is Sunset Shimmer, I’m sure you remember her.." The pegasus mare clenched her jaw.
"You could say that, yeah.." Dash's tail flicked in agitation, and she willed herself to stay calm. Sunset watched the two married mares, her ears slanting backward.
"So, Rarity, are you going to tell me what I walked in on? And don’t try to tell me it wasn’t what it looked like, because it looked pretty damn intimate.." Sunset cleared her throat as Rarity stammered, words jumbling in her brain.
"I, um, Rainbow Dash, it’s a pleasure to meet you, well, this you, and well, Rarity and I had been talking about maybe all three of us being.. Together..? Like how Pinkie has three partners?"
Rainbow barked out a laugh, looking at the two unicorns in shock. "Oh, have you now?" She advanced towards her wife, eyes shining with tears that she tried to blink away, squeezing her eyes shut as she spoke. "How long, huh? How long have you two been 'talking about this'?" Rarity exhaled, pawing at the floor as she took an apprehensive step closer to Rainbow.
"Don't you 'Darling' me, Rarity!" Rainbow shrieked, eyes snapping open as her wings flared out from her sides. Rarity tumbled backward, staring at her wife. "How. Long?" Rainbow repeated, nostrils flaring.
"She’s only been back in Equestria four months, Dashie, you don't-!" Dash gawked at the smaller unicorn.
"Oh, so it only took you four months to find a replacement?" Rarity's jaw dropped.
"No, Dash, it’s nothing like that, I could never replace you! I love you!"
Rainbow shook her head. "Really? Do you? Because she doesn’t look like you loving me!" She pointed an accusatory hoof towards Sunset. Rarity trembled, vaguely noticing that Rainbow had clipped her coronet feathers.
"Dash, are you going back to the Wonderbolt Squadron?" She asked softly, hoping to diffuse the hostility permeating the air.
"Why do you ask? So you know just how long you have to spend with your new marefriend?" Rainbow snarled, stomping her forehooves down on the floor. Sunset gawked at the pair, watching slack-jawed as Rarity dissolved into blubbering tears.
"No, please, Dashie, it’s not like that! I, please don’t go, Rainbow, I.. I couldn’t live without you!" Dash turned away from Rarity, stalking towards the door.
"Actually, you seem to be doing a pretty good job of that.." The door slammed shut, leaving Sunset to console the heartbroken mare smothering herself in the orange mare’s chest fur.
dont worry it gets better, there’s just a very rocky middle bit before Rarity, Rainbow Dash, and Sunset Shimmer are all a happy trio
