Taken with a friend, 10 second shutter speed, and sparklers in Portland, OR.

Updated Comments:

Thank you to everyone who faved and commented on this picture, it's one of my personal favorites too! There were a few people who asked how it was done, so I guess I'll fill in the details.... I had my camera set up on a meter, tried things out until I got the timer/color/aperture/shutter speed I wanted (w/ flash to illuminate her face), then stood on the back corners of the benches and lit the sparklers while my friend hit the button to take the picture. She ran to jump on the front corners of the benches, and stood real still while I "painted" with the sparklers and tried not to light her hair on fire, grin... and yes, it did take a "few" attempts to get the timing right, lol! I think we went through about 30 sparklers trying to get it right :)

yes it's light painting, you give the camera a longer exposure then draw with light, sparklers work really well because they are really bright and the light is consistent :)

so how do you do that set it for longer exposure? (I don't have one of those really bulky cameras I like the small handy cams) How long does that last I don't even see the sparklers in your hands? but WOW gorgeous effect

You generally need a 'bulky camera' SLR because you need manual settings. You change the shutter speed which can go on for minutes if you want it to. The shutter speed judges how long the shutter remains open. This picture was done in 10 seconds so the camera's shutter remained open for 10 seconds which means they had 10 seconds to draw in the air with sparklers. This picture would have been taken with one or two people drawing the wings, you can't see them or the shape of the sparklers because they are moving where as the person you can see has stayed still for 10 seconds.

can't they ever make a camera with all those capabilities and make it smaller?
Reply
:iconkjdstjme:

nope because one of the things that makes it so large is the lens, and the idea of an SLR is that you can change what lens you use

It depends on your camera, some of the smaller ones don't have a lot of the "manual" settings that the larger ones do, but my old Canon point n shoot had quite a few. If you can find a manual (M) setting, figure out if they let you adjust your shutter speed and if so, bump it up as high as you can. Thank you for the fave and comments :)

welcome thanks for the tutorial I do have a canon digital camera I got when i was 16 > >.. that had to replace my more beloved original fujifilm digital camera that i got for my 16th.. I'll have to look through the settings it depresses me that it doesn't have a B&W setting

It should, what model do you have? With my Canon, when I was on the manual setting it let me choose b&w or sepia, quite a few different options, actually. Does the camera have a wheel with an "M" on it?

pheww goodness well it's *counts* six years old? I'd have to go hunt it down to get the model but I've been through the menu looking for it and can't find it played with all the functions and I swear it should be there .. but I haven't found it
