I'm not around here much anymore. If you want to see what I've been up to, swing by my webpage www.ashtonmason.net

Hi to everyone I know here
Ok so I seem to have dropped out of DA. Sorry to anyone who misses me.

I like DA and I had a great time here. I'm still taking shots, but lately I can't be bothered to submit them. I really enjoyed having an audience for my stuff, plus I learned a huge amount and met lots of great people (who I have now lost touch with a bit, which is sad), but after a while, chasing favourites and one line comments starts to seem a bit old.

My best wishes to everyone I know here. If you want to contact me you can get me at ashton_mason [at] yahoo [dot] co [dot] uk. Hopefully I will be back from time to say hello. I also have a website, www.nerve.org.za, and plans (albe they slacker plans) to revamp it into a regularly updated sort of online photographic magazine. Who knows, it could happen.

love
Ash
Hi to everyone who I know around here. Sorry I've been missing for a while.

In case you're wondering where I've been, I have been taking the odd photo -- although not with the insane intensity that I was shooting last year -- but haven't really been hanging around on DA much or submitting any of the shots (two mortal sins, no doubt). At the moment I still don't have a net connection at home (or even a landline). And to be honest it hasn't been bothering me much -- it's summer and I've recently moved to a new flat, so there are lots of distractions.

The shots that I've been shooting have all been on Fuji Neopan 1600, which I've been rediscovering lately. It has the dual benefits of giving these really grainy high contrast results while also, happily, allowing me to shoot in less light than I'm used to (which is useful in London).

The catch is that it doesn't have much exposure latitude, so if your exposures (or the camera's) aren't good then the important detail can easily be lost. A plus side of that is that it's a lot closer to the metal than a more forgiving film like Neopan 400 or 100 ACROS. And the grain is pretty sexy, let's face it :)

I've also been getting to grips with the gain setting on my scanner, which can be useful for extracting useful detail out of a technically under- or overexposed neg.

Anyway, enough technical drivel :)

Apologies for the lack of activity around here. Life has been a bit full lately, and, for worse or better, not full of photography. I've moved house, which killed a weekend or two, I've been working like a dog at work (10-12 hour days and some weekends), and inbetween I've even found some time for some real life pursuits like cycling and and reading and socialising. So there hasn't been much actual photography going on, and what there is I haven't had much time or inclination to scan.

Anyway I hope you're all well, all the people I know here. Thanks for dropping by. Often it seems like you have to submit another picture, to get another fix of attention. I guess I'm a bit tired of that as well. But god knows it's a big site and there's no time to see it all, I for one have long since deleted my watchlist and just randomly browse people I like, and even that has petered out to nothing lately due to having no net connection at home yet and no time to surf at work. Busy times.

[warning this story is long and relatively pointless]

actually it was so long and pointless that I decided only the super-keen would read it, and deleted it :)

so instead, a question. do you think our eyes have more depth of field in bright sunlight than on cloudy days? is a narrower band of stuff in focus when it's dark?

[warning this story is long and relatively pointless]

Evidence of London waking up for Summer is the sheer number of bizarre interactions I've had with random strangers this weekend. This, in a city where talking to strangers in public normally results in them thinking you're a nutcase.

Yesterday I went into my current favourite coffee bar in Richmond, and got into a conversation with the two waitresses about pens and countries of origin. I mention I'm in town to see a flat, and next thing I know one of the waitresses, Kathy, who I've never met before, has practically suggested we move in together (into a two bedroom flat, damn), and we've swapped phone numbers and promised to call each other with potential leads. Yes she has a boyfriend.

I go look at the flat and then head back to the coffee bar to tell Kathy that I've decided to take the flat (a one bedroom) so the "deal" is off. This time I get into a conversation with an Ozzie couple who've been in London just two days and are sussing out the different areas for a place to live.

On the train on the way back from Richmond to Putney I notice that the two guys sitting opposite me have a log with them, and a guitar. They're obvious hipster/dopehead types, and I hear them talking about anti-war protest in central London. I've got my camera with me and wouldn't mind shooting a protest, so I ask them for details. And while I'm at it, I can't resist asking about the log, right? The details are a bit sketchy but basically they're playing in a group called 'Mahogany Log', who have a gig that night, but either a band-member or the whole group can't make it, so for some reason it seemed appropriate to take a log along as replacement. They searched high and low for a log (not a common thing in London, where wood fires are illegal) and eventually found one with some trash in a skip. So there you go. David Lynch, anyone? Maybe it's something in the coffee.

Later in the day I'm in another coffee shop (yes you do detect a pattern forming here), Caffe Nero at Clapham Junction, which is my second favourite. This time a random middleaged German guy sits down next to me, asking if the seat is free, and starts telling me about how he's here for the London marathon, all about the place where he lives in Bavaria, and the state of the German manufacturing industry (companies start off manufacturing new products in Germany at high cost, then move manufacturing to third world countries to lower the costs as the products reach the end of their lifespans, apparently). Nice enough guy but eventually my limited interest in German manufacturing economics starts to shine through and I make my excuses and head off home.

Today, another day, hopefully no german economic tips. I start off at Clapham Junction, waiting for the train to work (yes, on a sunday -- long story). There's this pretty young girl next to me on the platform and I speak to her, we sit together on the train and she's telling me all about her trip to venice (with her boyfriend, here we go again), how she lives in richmond (fancy that...), and studies modern history at Oxford University. Well, cool. She is frankly amazing.

Then while we're talking I notice there's a mother with two young kids sitting opposite us, and one of the kids, a girl of about six, suddently starts telling us how she's off somewhere on the train to see something (I confess I didn't catch where or what). Now me and this babe are talking to this six year old girl. Then the babe gets off (at richmond). As she stands up to leave she tells me if I ever need a solicitor in Richmond then to use (someone or other), because he's her father. Thanks, I'll bear that in mind. I, desperate for a way to not let her leave without getting her number, say something stupid like "so, uh, I'll probably never see you again ... which is a pity". She's like, "well, I'm often around the office". uhuh. Then she's gone and I'm left with the mother and two kids to talk to.

The six year old girl is bending my ear about how tomato sauce contains tomatoes, chilli sauce contains chillis, etc. Very cute, actually. Then the mother starts up and is telling me how she used to be in computers (no bullshit either, she was a full-on programmer), and before that trained and worked as a secretary and a chef, and now is training as a carpenter and joiner (!). The young boy asks me if I'm a computer programmer, and I ask him, why do I look like one? And he thinks and says, "no but you asked intelligent questions so you're probably quite bright" (riiight. personally I think he heard me tell the babe what I did for a living). Now he knows I'm definately a programmer and is asking me whether I know how he can get some old game working on his modern computer (no, in a word. ask your mom).

So yeah, long and boring story, but strange weekend. Perhaps this all doesn't seem particularly unusual to people who live in small towns, but in London this kind of thing is very rare. And kind of nice .. summer here we come!

I found a new flat! Woohoo! It's a one bedroom flat; no more flatmates! It's kinda small, but that's ok. Also not much in the way of furniture (furnished flats are typical here) but that's ok as well, it means I can make the space my own.

In more news, I feel a burst of colour coming on. And maybe some more grainy fast b&w. But that'll all have to wait, because even though today is a sunday, the official day of rest if ever there was one (ok unless you're jewish, which I'm not), I have to go to work! Clearly this is not a good thing. Hence my lurking around here trying to put it off.

I can see this is going to be another one of those weekends, where I don't go shopping, or swimming, or cycling, or anything at all much really, except sit around in coffee shops and drink coffee (and work, today). Well at least I found a flat, that must count for something.

The London mini-devmeet was a great success, albeit a modestly sized one. We had stevesm, redux and myself, plus Ian and Joe who weren't practising deviants (or at least they confessed to nothing even under repeated application of the truth serum -- in this case Carlsberg and Coca Cola).

Met stevesm and Joe 'near a blue speed camera' on Oxford street, and we headed down to pick up redux from a seedy doorway in Berwick Street which I personally would have placed as a brothel, but which stevesm assured me was in fact the venue for a high profile meeting of some sorts between redux, Ian, and some geezer called Tom (who refused even the truth serum and is subject to further investigation).

Having dispensed with the Berwick Street style formalities (ay up mate, fancy a pint?), and debating briefly the relative (de-)merits of MacDonalds and Burger King, we settled for Burger King and made our way down to Piccadilly Circus, of all places, to sample the fine fare of the Burger King outlet there. My flatmate later described the BK at Piccadilly Circus as "horrible" but was quick to add she had "never eaten there" (of course not) and related that the only time she had been into it at all was to conduct illegal transactions over contraband substances with a dodgy south african in a manky floorlength trenchcoat (wasn't me guv, honest).

On the way to said BK we passed the Soho branch of Wagamama, and I suggested we skip the BK and head for some fine minimalist noodlebar action instead. But someone (could well have been redux) waved it aside, saying he was "really in the mood for some Burger King right now". Glancing back at the assortment of black-clad characters with generally either long hair or no hair at all, I could see I was dealing with a heartier breed than the average pimplefaced 16-year-old DA trendwhore wannabe.

At Piccadilly we managed to get in and out of BK with a minimum of standing around and shouting at the itinerent and unresponsive staff, even when they failed to comprehend even the basic stock-in-trade codewords of the BK empire, such as "whopper with cheese", and "burger".

Clutching our spoils we retired to the relative safety of the steps around the Eros fountain in the middle of Piccadilly. Ah, my old haunt. At first we wondered why everyone else was sitting on the other side of the steps, but then it became clear when the wind shifted direction and Eros himself began to piddle daintily on us from above.

After a while a band of travelling musicians started to play a stomping tribal rythm on a collection of oversized drums, and stevesm and I took the opportunity to make like photojournalists, steve with his nifty digital and me shooting, for some reason, the most vibrantly colourful and sun-drenched scene I've seen all year in grainy 1600 black and white.

Eventually we retired even further to a pub in soho, which is where memory begins to become less distinct, and coloured with suspect traces of tequila and ginger ale. I do recall redux being a genuinely funny bloke in a way that doesn't come across well in his flickering, staring, red and blue eyed DA icon, with alledgedly a fine collection of old metal bodied cameras, a degree in graphic design, and a job as a university webmaster to his name back in manchester. And I recall stevesm being an all round nice guy who'd worked in all sorts of bizarre and frankly unlikely trades including wedding photographer, musical instrument salesman, and photographer's assistant, before settling into his current vocation as housewife in a small town "further southeast than greenwich". As for Ian and Joe I remember Ian making stoic remarks and working as a designer, and Joe making few remarks at all and working as a software developer.

Eventually the night drew to a close, after several attempts at classic beer photography and low-light handheld shots of fastmoving subjects, and we headed on our respective ways, with me, the three-year London veteran, leading natives Steve and Joe through the heart of saturday night West End madness and safely back to Charing Cross.

All in all a good meet. Hopefully I'll get my photos developed today, if I can get my ass out of the house before the shops close.

The London mini-devmeet has been postponed to the weekend of the 5th and 6th of april (not sure of the exact day yet). Venue also to be decided but somewhere in central London. Basically a small lowkey meetup over a couple of drinks. Anyone is welcome, give one of us a shout if you're interested.

The list so far:

redux
nasigoreng
doriano

More capetown shots to come, when I get around to scanning them. It all takes so much time! Bought NeatImage, so my pics should be much less noisy from now one -- unfortunately each scan now takes a bunch more time.

Time to get political; give these a read:

There are more shots to come from my capetown mission (you'll be relieved to hear, no doubt). But pesky distractions, like work, have been preventing me from shcanning them -- plus the fact that it currently takes me about an hour to shcan and touch up each one, since I'm trying to do The Right Thing and scan them at print resolution straight off.

It's been nice to get a positive reaction to my latest stuff -- I guess the daily deviation certainly helped there -- since the subject is very close to my heart. Although London is a fascinating place with an unbelievable amount of cool things to do, I often feel like I lead half a life here and my heart only truly comes to life when I'm in capetown (and presumably other places I haven't yet been to, to be fair). A large part of my current "ugh, London" attitude is really a winter thing: Winter in London is an evil thing not to be toyed with lightly by those that value their souls :) Summer by contrast is a delight: the entire city comes to life like a flower freed from the embrace of some deathly spell.

But enough ranting. Our usual program will resume shortly.

Ironically I almost decided not to submit that shot; I decided not many people would like it but I wanted to submit it anyway because I liked it. So it's been great to find that other people saw something in it as well.

Thanks to everyone who's made encouraging comments, and particularly to those who've offered critical advice on my recent shots, which is even more appreciated and often harder to come by.

Anyone know why I keep getting out of date pages on deviant art at home? It's fine at work, and used to be ok at home.

I suppose I should read the forums.

Deviant Art is really becoming unusable for me from home -- which is where I submit my images -- although strangely at work it's fine. Old versions of pages, and general slowness. Verunec was forced to leave by similar issues, I hope I don't go the same way. I certainly won't be paying for this kind of service.
