Skategirl Revisited by ash Skategirl Revisited by ash
I think this is the fourth photo I've posted of this teenage girl. Some people may be starting to wonder...
She's just always there, right? At this skatepark. And like, she's the only girl there. So naturally, she attracts my attention. Ok. I'm glad we cleared that up.
To be honest she does fascinate me, with her teenage pretention and her fiercely independent vibes. She has a certain confident style.

True, she has a board, which does suggest she actually uses it. Although, I know of people in cape town who strap their surfboards to their cars and go for a drive, with no intention at all of doing any surfing.

*Maybe the reason he's implying she might not be able to skate is not because she's a girl but because there are loads more people, of both sexes, who look like they skate than actually do.

yeah, and she blew a few hundred quid on a skateboard cause it looks cool. right.

Hey, maybe you should show her the photos !

I might actually, who knows.

Does she mind you taking these shots, or were you hiding inside a parked van?

You think I'd drive a van in London? Parking's a nightmare :) (Smile)

Most of my 'street' photos are candids of strangers. They're legal here (in the UK) in public spaces -- what's done in public is already in the public eye. The exception is if the person expressly asks you not to photograph them. Often the person will spot you but not have time to react much, so the shot is half candid. Then I grin and aknowledge that I've been spotted, watch their reaction. Often I'll go and talk to them, to establish that I'm not a weirdo, and also out of interest.

In this case I think she is aware that I photograph her when I'm there (and loads of other people), and she did seem to be posing a bit sometimes. But I've never spoken to her, yet.

Yes, but can she skate?
Does she shred or just pose?

She does skate, she's not astoundingly good, but on the other hand she's a lot better than me :) (Smile) -- and hey, she's pretty young. She spends most of her time skating backwards and forwards along a cross section at the shallow end of the bowl, doing tricks at each end. She doesn't do big jumps.

Any high-passing ;) (Wink) ?

Heh yeah there was some of that. Earther's talking about this photoshop trick he showed me for doing an unsharp mask using layers and a high pass filter. In 8-bit mode, you create a duplicate copy of the image as a new layer, set the blend mode of the top layer to Hard Light, and run a High Pass filter on the top layer. Works real well, and doesn't amplify the noise as much as Unsharp Mask.

Earther's comments about tone and photoshop work (or lack thereof) on my earlier shots made me pay more attention to that sort of thing, cheers dude.

p.s. earther, do you really have to be such a boring chauvinistic p**?

Maybe the reason he's implying she might not be able to skate is not because she's a girl but because there are loads more people, of both sexes, who look like they skate than actually do. You feminist studies are showing ;) (Wink)

How come u stoped watching me?!

I've stopped watching basically everyone, I found it too stressful :) (Smile) Now I just have that big list of icons on my journal, and I flit around as the mood takes me. Which is pretty much what I did anyway :) (Smile)

i'm gonna get a 28-300mm for my birtday..

Kewl. Mine's a Canon EF f/4.5-5.6 75-300mm III USM, for what it's worth. I was checking out the Image Stabilizing version of the same lens the other day -- but it's way too expensive. *sniff*

She certainly has that look of confidence about her, and has all of the correct uniform to be a true urban hipster.

Does she mind you taking these shots, or were you hiding inside a parked van?

Nice depth of field to really focus your eyes on the subject and draw away fro the background, whilst keeping her in the environment. I like it, cool shot.

I like the way you caught her leaning the way the fenceposts are. Looks like she just belongs there :-) (Smile)

I really like the DOF in this image. And then... the vertical lines of the bars contrasting with the diagonal of the post... and then how she is halfway in between. Good Job!

she looks very much in control of things. partly because she has one foot on her skateboard to keep it from rolling away, but also in the casual way she uses her cell phone to call her parents to let them know she's going to be late, or maybe just to play tetris. or maybe i'm just reading too much into things again.
