Lake of Spirits by ash Lake of Spirits by ash
Where's the Photography/Dark section? This is another picture of the lake at Glendalough in Ireland. It's quite a simple photo, but I like the sombre greyness of it.

This image, being dark, probably depends heavily on the settings of the monitor it's viewed on. I've PS'd it to look good on mine, but if it's totally black on yours then sorry. As a rough guide, I can see a hint of detail in the mountain behind the nearest bird, but the trees on the right are pure black.

ooh, very nice. I really like the clouds just above the mountains; they have a nice contrast to them. Also like how you can see a few waves stretching across the pic in the water.
Great work.

it is black on mine, and it doesn't bother me at all.
it's very dark, and very moody, and therefore different than hundreds of other 'technically correct' insipid landscapes. you know what i mean...

well, yes, but in fairness I suspect that on some people's monitors the image really will be *totally black* from the horizon down. try adjusting the gamma correction on your display card and you'll see what I mean. I'm never sure what to set my gamma correction to, personally -- on the one hand every calibration tool I try tells me a different thing, and on the other hand it seems to me that even if I manage to calibrate mine "correctly" (according to the supposed average gamma), my images will likely still look wrong on many people's (uncalibrated) screens. so I currently just set mine to what makes most images I come across look about right.
