Dansey Place 1 by ash Dansey Place 1 by ash
This series of pictures were all taken in the same street in London's Chinatown. It's a real backalley, where steam rushes periodically from gratings in the back walls of restuarants, serious Chinese go about their business hauling crates and sacks of rice, and the only other people to be seen are Chinese Londoners who buy fresh produce and unrecognisable seafood from strange backstreet stalls. Ironically it's an alleyway leading straight off Wardour street, the most touristy street in Chinatown, but the tourists avoid it, perhaps because it looks so seedy -- or perhaps they think they've stumbled upon a crack in the Chinatown stage set and momentarily glimpsed the grimy reality behind.

This shot shows some signs on the inside of the open door of a "shop" selling seafood.

I was drawn to the thumbnail and was happily surprised at seeing the larger image. I can't explain why I like it but I do! Good composition, as always!

Hey yes I've seen The Pillow Book (twice) -- it's a great movie. You're spot on with the reference although I had forgotten about the movie up until now

I'm lucky because I can understand completely nothing about the chinese language, thus I can appreciate deeply the graphical beauty of this alphabet.
Even if this is surely a very profane and commercial communication it keeps the sensual look (do you remember "The pillow book" by Peter Greenaway, sometimes considered an erotic movie!).
More than an alphabet. A kind of erotic code. Hmm, maybe I'm crazy.
