Cloudbank over Robben Island by ash Cloudbank over Robben Island by ash
Could have submitted this under photography I guess but I think it makes a nifty wallpaper so what the heck.

The sea is the South Atlantic viewed from Bloubergstrand, Cape Town, South Africa. The island is Robben Island, where ex-president Nelson Mandela spent 27 years.

The cloud is a huge bank that rolled in from the west late in the afternoon -- only a few hours before it had been completely cloudless. I was stoked since this was the very last day of an otherwise cloudless week in which I was supposed to be photographing cloudscapes for a kind of collaborative photo project I was doing with some friends.

There are 1280x960 and 1600x1200 versions on my site: www.nerve.org.za

UPDATE: here's a new version of this image with less grain: [link]

thanks!

Taking pics of clouds: I have a feeling the slide film helped a lot, if you're using a film camera (I suspect you're using a digital but anyway) then try using slide film rather than negative film and see what you think.

Otherwise I can't take too much credit for the way the shot came out; I think the camera and nature did most of the work. The camera has done a *really* good job of working out the exposure, considering how tricky the scene is to expose correctly and how intolerant slide film is (I've heard) to under- or overexposure.

Yeah the image is grainy -- you should have seen it before I ran it through Despeckle in photoshop =) (Smile) I blame the scanner since the film is Fuji Provia and hence unlikely to show grain at that size. I have a print of the shot which isn't grainy, I could try scanning that myself.

beautiful shot, [love the rays of sun shining through the clouds] but it's a bit grainy. i'd take it into photoshop or psp and fix that.
