Catherine stood over a petri dish and examined the result of a study on the function of the gene mal6, which ensured that the cell knew where its end was and where it should grow. Numerous colonies had grown on the selective medium and now the microscope would show whether the induced mutants had real influence on the growth areas of the cell. If she was successful and understood the mechanism of cell growth in S.cerevisiae, she would be a big step closer to do so with the human organism, because in principle was the same in all eukaryotes.

It was dusk. The sun rose. Orange light lit up the Baker Street. Such a peaceful, normal picture, but the appearances were deceptive. Catherine sat motionless for many hours on the window sill, watching the Baker Street. Even blink she just did when it was absolutely necessary. Hardly a man could pass her surveillance area. Actually, nothing unusual, but Catherine felt that this was just the calm before the storm.
Last night she had startled out of her sleep around midnight. Shots were fired and she had heard loud screams. When she got out of bed and walked to the window, she had only seen as Sherlock ran off

Two months later, Catherine was on her way home from a hard day in her laboratory. Her thesis was in its final part, now. After she had completed her eight-week internship project, under Professor Niels guide, she had immediately started her and she had to deliver her results next month.
Since Sherlock, and also John, continued to ignore her completely, no matter where she accidentally ran into them, she spent almost all of her time in the laboratory to evaluate or to write down her data. She did not know what to do with her time anyway and she just went home to take a shower and or changing her closes.

Catherine was poking restlessly in her sundae and looked around. Pure life prevailed in this little café, and many students were sitting close together, chatted and laughed together, and no one noticed the two guests who stared at each other appraisingly. Upbeat music came from small boxes over their heads and everything was peaceful, but Catherine did not realize all this. The reason why she was here was much more serious and made her restless. Before her lay a conversation that had given her long sleepless nights, because she felt that a disaster was brewing and would soon escalate.

Catherine sat at the window of her living room, which afforded a view of the Bakerstreet. She often sat here in the last two weeks. Watching life as it flowed by, as people lived their daily lives, while hers was lost. She hated herself for it, but so it was. Her life she got long gone in the series. It was empty.

A month later, Catherine's life was almost back to a normal student one. The spring had arrived in London and the plants were in full bloom. She went on working on research at the mechanisms of cell division on S.pombe, learned incidentally everything about the subject.
