Song of the Wind by Ascynd Song of the Wind by Ascynd
It took a long time, longer than Ico expected, before he had any results trying to learn the basic wind magic that granted an enhanced sense of hearing. In fact it wasn't until one day, when he had given up for the day and was walking home, that he had noticed anything different at all. As he walked home he picked up the curious sound of his heart thumping in his chest. Then he could feel the blood rush through his ears, and he became awkwardly aware of other sounds of his body's inner workings. As the sounds came to his attention they became louder, almost thundering. It was a bit frightening and he had to stop and clear his mind, trying to tune them out. Gradually he was able to push the sounds out of his mind. Once they quieted, it was then he noticed the sounds outside of himself. He could feel the wind sighing through the trees... but it wasn't just the trees nearby. He could hear the breeze through the whole wood. It sounded like the forest was breathing, or whispering. He could hear the water seeping up through the trunk of a tree nearby, and the distant wind high in the sky, shaping the clouds. All the birds, all the insects, wove their songs together into a kind of tone... he couldn't pick them out individually yet, but later on he would think that with practice, that might be something he could do. But for the moment, he was lost in the strange music, only just realizing that it was the wind bringing all these sounds along with it, like a song it was singing as it traveled.

It would still be awhile before he was able to perform this magic on command... but Ico had proven to himself that he could do it, and that made him very happy.

Well I am not great at visual direction yet but the surreal, swirly way the forest is painted is supposed to represent how Ico senses the sounds swirling around him, and that's why the style differs from the foreground. I'm also practicing lighting with some subsurface scattering, it's not perfect but it's a good start. =D

+3/397 wyns (full body color=2+background=1), 2/2 for independent learning of Basic Air: Enhanced Hearing... learning will be complete on 11/13/17.

This looks wonderful, Ascynd! What fun brushes too. :D

But my favorite part is the tricky perspective! Really nice man!

Thanks! As usual I wanted to try something different, heh. The brushes are just the basic Sai bristle brush on a paper texture though. I painted the swirly stuff...

Heheh thanks! I was trying to do something in an impressionistic style. If I had to do it over I would have done the whole sky with the brushstrokes instead of just the clouds.

Thanks! I was trying for something impressionistic-ish... I think if I did it over again I would paint the whole sky with the swirly brushstrokes instead of just the clouds.

This is absolutely gorgeous! I love the perspective and how the different style used for the trees works with the style used on Ico

Aw shucks, thanks... visual direction is one of my weaker suits, I'm really trying to improve on it... I'm glad you like the perspective too, I draw too many pictures from a very straightforward POV, I need to mix it up more!
