OotG: Black Sun by Ascynd OotG: Black Sun by Ascynd
Best attempt (be me, so far) at rendering a realistic depiction of a griffin from the Order of the Griffin breeding game website.

Glad you like them... this one looks way blurry, unless you see it in full view.

Wow! I envy people who can work 3D programs...that technical stuff is way beyond me. Beautiful job on the texture and the colours, but actually what caught my eye is those forelegs -- the subtle twist of the muscles around the arm really gives this that extra push! Great attention to detail there, this is really one of the most believable and thought-out models I've seen!

Well I can't take credit for the model, I bought it here... [link]

However I recolored the texture and did a lot of work on the morph and material nodes to highlight the details, especially on those front legs so that the scales shine and stand out. Originally they were yellow and not very shiny. =)

Thanks, and glad you liked it!

Haha, well either way it looks stunningly realistic! Your texture work is magnificent, and you certainly improved a lot on that model (especially those wings...gosh, the originals are so ratty looking!) :]

Thanks again, I would have liked to add some iridescence to the wings also, but at the time I couldn't get it to look right... now I think I have an idea how to for next time.

Nice.
The shoulders and neck show a good deal of iridescence, but the wings barely show - they just look shiny.

Thanks, yeah I tried applying the same technique to the wings but it didn't look right. I think now I have an idea of how to do it, but I will have to save it for the next one. =)

Oh, I like it a lot! I'm jealous of you folks who are so adept at working with 3-D models, and at the same time I really do so enjoy the resulting artwork! She's a very petty griffin. You've done a lovely job with the irridescent overlay in GIMP. Aside from that, I'm a detail person, and as such I'm quite fond of her front feet -- the texture of the skin and the muscle tone underneath is wonderful.

Thanks for sharing!

Glad you like it! I spent over an hour I think tweaking the dials on those forelegs so that the scales were shiny, but not plastic looking... the claws could use some work maybe, a bit too shiny, but it's hard to tone it down without reworking the texture underneath, which I just may do for my next one.

As for the iridescence it's a little flat to my eye, but I think I know how I can fix that, too. I will if I do one where the full body is iridescent. It will require me to pull out the tablet and do a lot more detail painting.

Oh, a full body oily sounds like an excellent challenge! Have you considered trying one of the lighter shades for another griffin? Like the Pearl or the Opal? You still have the opportunity to test your theory with the iridescence. Just a suggestion to toss out there. I love the Black oily as much as anything else, especially when rendered in such a lovely 3-D environment.

I didn't find the scales to be overly shiny, but keeping in mind this is on an Oily griffin, I imagine the whole body of the beast to be somehow cleaner, brighter, and shinier than I might expect of other colors. Just my opinion, I'm sure!

O_O lovely! If you want to practice more, I suggest the pumas first, since they or solid in color. You can even try the rainbow oilies. (Note: This is ml1201 on the site, lol).

Thanks! The texture can be easily modified to pumas, I think. I have another texture that does not look quite so fluffy, that might handle markings well too. But it also looks a little less realistic.

Thanks! What I did to this one besides turn it from brown to black, is mostly make a spec map for the front legs and a lot of tweaking to get the scales to look glossy. DA doesn't seem to be loading fullview properly (at least for me) though so you might have to download to see it...

Thanks... It's the RawArt brown griffin texture layered and with the color adjusted. The irridescence effect was added after in Gimp... the bump and specularity wouldn't look right for feathers if I added it flat to the model.
