Post Birthday Update

Journal Entry: Sun Apr 14, 2013, 12:26 PM

The other day was my birthday, and pretty busy one. I decided now would be a good time to update this blog, since I haven't updated here since last June. I'm not really much for posting about my life, and I really haven't had much to update. Since my last update, I've gotten a new job, teaching again, and it's taken up a lot my time and energy. Not a bad thing, but indicates I haven't had much to really update here. Really, if you wanted to learn more about me, you'd do better to follow my Tumblr accounts: Organized Chaos ("personal" and random content blog) and Random Marks (the art blog). Both are updated pretty frequently, and more so than my DA gallery and my Blogspot gallery (although I do update there for more detailed art posts).

I'll probably craft a generalized about me post and sticky it in a few days. If I do have big things happening related to my art and writing, I'll try to post it here as well as on my other locations.

Summer time

Journal Entry: Mon Jun 4, 2012, 12:30 PM

About time to update this journal. Summer's starting, which mostly means hot weather and swimming for me. (Hey, I'm an adult in the so-called "real world.")

I've been pretty quiet over here, not too many updates to the gallery. But there are a few things going on over at Club-Tutu, and I've gotten into some fandoms, so there's the chance for fan related stuff, and some original things.

Yep. That's it. Have a good summer, everyone!

Journal Entry: Sat Apr 14, 2012, 12:59 PM

Wow. High time I bumped that last journal off the front page. I really should make it a scheduled thing to update this once a month, but I tend to put things off because I tend not to have much to report. Anyway, here's what's been up.

First, yesterday was my birthday. I'm now 31, although I feel like I'm still something like 25 or something mentally. Didn't do too much, just a nice dinner with my family. Thanks so much for the birthday wishes.

Second, I've been doing rather well with a challenge for the year, which is to draw a monthly themed item everyday for all of 2012. Admittedly, I'll already sort of failed in that I've missed days, but I'm still going at it, working at drawing something no matter how quick and lousy each day. I was doing all right with posting for the first couple of months, but I really need to do some art dumps for the last few months. It's been a difficult challenge, but a learning experience. Last month's theme, plants, actually had the result of more observation based drawings. If you want to see more of my work, check out my art blog or my Tumblr,… .

I plan on getting new tablet in the next few months. It won't have big effect on the quality, but I think it's time to see about getting a new one. The current pen is getting pretty worn out, and because it's the old Graphire, Wacom no longer produces the part (or it's out of stock and I have no idea if they'll get new ones), so time to move to the new model. Currently weighing my options and my budget for a Bamboo Create or an Intuos small or medium. I have gotten a new lightpad by Arograph, a nice large one that'll be nice for larger pieces.

Other than that, mostly work. Time to start working on costumes for Dragon*Con, and I'll try to share my progress here for the props.

Yeah. That's about it.

20 Features

Journal Entry: Tue Dec 20, 2011, 5:10 PM

1. For each of the 20 first people answering this journal, I will put their avatar and the three deviations I like most from their gallery on the list!

2. If you answer, you have to do the same in your journal, putting the tagger on the first place. The idea of this is not to get a free feature, it is to spread art around for everyone!

That light was yet young, as was the day, and the young monarch found himself now with time to spare, though there was never any question of how he would spend it. With a last piece of royal business attended to, he sought out Rue again, and found her quickly, still in their rooms. She sat primly on a velvet-upholstered chair as though trying to gather herself, far more regal than any of the carved decorations upon it, but matching them in solemnity. His eyebrows rose despite himself as slight shock struck him; his princess's distant serenity never failed her, but the stiffness of her slender fingers spread over her skirt and the absence of her gaze made that serenity seem strained. So it appeared to him, at least, though to most it might merely have been a cordiality more prim than usual. A plate of what should have been pancakes rested beside the pan, a shameful display of his lacking experience with this. Most were dough or blackened mess, and none the perfection that could somehow be found in between such dismal states. This was his final chance. He must be properly careful. He must, for soon his princess would want breakfast, and he had to be ready.
It had to be a poor sort of prince that left his princess hungry, after all. He refused to let himself descend to so lowly a position.

Jobs and Dragon*Con

Journal Entry: Sat Aug 27, 2011, 9:28 AM

It's been a long time since I last updated, huh? A bit of a drought.

Good news is I have new full time job, and I started it a few weeks ago. That's one worry I don't have to fret about so much any more. It's taking advantage of my editing background. A bit routine, but I like the challenge.

Another good thing is next week is Dragon*Con! Yes! I'll be meeting up with friends and hope to have some fun. Let me know if you're going. We may luck up and meet up. I don't have too much planned, only a few things set in stone. I will be at the Birds of Prey photoshoot on Friday, the DC photoshoot on Saturday, and walking around with my friends briefly as Leena in our Warehouse 13 group cosplay. There's definite interest in checking out some of the Eureka and Warehouse 13 panels. Otherwise, it's very open.

April Is Coming!

Journal Entry: Sun Mar 27, 2011, 10:46 AM

Ah, just three more days until April starts. March wasn't the greatest, but feels better than February did. Still, glad to start a new month, and especially April. My birthday is coming up, stuff is going on in the area, and it's spring. It's all good.

Pokémon wise, I have beaten the third gym leader, Burg, and working on building up my current team. It took a little while to adjust my team around because I had a Pansear for a while, a fire type, which I never really used all that much in my core team, as well as a normal type in my Lilipup/Herdier. After thinking about it and how I actually wasn't using him, I decided to drop my Pansear and replace him with a Scraggy, a dark-fighting type, which helped to fill in the offensive gaps I had. Will they be the strongest team ever, even at most evolved state? Probably not. But I think I'll do well enough through the main game. And I tend to keep the pokémon I start with throughout the game for as long as I can. Only annoying thing I've been having is connecting to the WiFi. Will keep working on it, both for getting Victini before that event expires, and to start trading because I'm now getting to places with version exclusive 'mon.

Also, the big thing (other than my birthday) is April Drawing starts again! It's another chance for me to do a daily challenge, and this one is a community challenge. It's held over at it's LJ community page and anyone is free to join. The challenge is draw something, anything, no matter how quickly, every day in April. This can be doodles, scribbles, thumbnails, sketches, studies, rough pencils to a piece, or a finished piece. Anything, so long as it was done during that day. The only exception would be stuff you draw for work, if you work someplace that involves artwork; e.g. if you're a professional comics artist, the page you draw for your client would not count, but a personal project is fine. To learn more, check out the comm's about page here:…

I look forward to it. And here's hoping you keep an eye out on it either here or on my Tumblr page,

Also, new contest will be announced over at :iconclub-tutu: on the first. Always a good thing.

See you in April!

Of Pokemon and Sailor Senshi

Journal Entry: Fri Mar 4, 2011, 8:44 AM

I cannot wait for Sunday. Some of you may have guessed from the couple of pieces I did for February that I'm a mild Pokémon fan. I used to be interested in the anime back when it was first airing, but I don't much care for or know anything about the series over the last few years. I was usually more interested in the game, anyway. Well, Sunday is when Black and White are released, and I'm toying with the idea of doing some sketches to keep track of how things go while I play the game. Probably won't be as clever or as entertaining as the ones done by other artists, like TamarinFrog, but I want to have some fun with it outside of playing the game. If I do, keep in mind that I'll be basing it on game play from Black, not White, and there are going to be story differences, especially how I'll be going to Black City instead of the White Forest. Maybe I'll get White sometime in the future after I get pretty far with Black so I can see what that part looks like, but that's a maybe.

In other news, I'd like to, after I get some other long overdue artwork done, do a set of pictures to go with the Blue Beetle-Sailor Mercury piece I did.
Sailor Mercury and Blue Beetle by Asatira
I'd like to do the other Inner Senshi, but outside of Venus being paired with Booster Gold, I've got nothing. Keep in mind that while having the colors work well together is a plus, I'd rather go with either powers or personality parallels. For instance, Venus and Booster, while both featuring gold/yellow prominently in their uniforms, go together well because they have similar personalities or backgrounds; both seek a certain degree of fame, but deep down both are serious soldiers and fighters doing their best to protect those around them. Beetle and Mercury both share science and being very intelligent people; the blue was just a bonus. So, any suggestions of comic characters from DC, Marvel, or other companies that would work well based on personality or powers with Jupiter and Mars are very welcome.

February is Over!

Journal Entry: Tue Mar 1, 2011, 2:15 AM

And rather glad of it. Personally, February was a rather eh month and I'm glad to move on to a new month, even if a calendar date really doesn't mean all that much. That said, I am glad with what I've accomplished this month artistically. I set myself a challenge of drawing a finished image everyday of the month, and while I did falter for three days, that is much better than my previous attempts to draw daily. So here are some thoughts about my daily February drawings.

:bulletblack: I learned I actually can draw something everyday. No, really, that is a big deal to me. I am very bad about completing anything, and I tend to let my fear be my big artist's block. I avoid drawing, I make excuses not to draw. I spend way too much time online or watching TV. But, this month I didn't let my excuses get in the way and I actually drew something almost everyday. Sure, some of those days were crap, but they were drawn nonetheless.

:bulletblack: I can be pretty persistent when I want to be. Very closely related to the last point, but this was mostly a challenge of will more than anything else. In fact, prior to the middle of the month, when I was hitting a kind of hump, I had to remind myself that if I didn't draw today, I would put it off again the next day, failing the challenge. With the exception of four days when I missed my three drawings, I made myself sit down and draw because I didn't want to disappoint anyone, least of all myself.

:bulletblack: I really like working with pen and ink. With a few exceptions, most of the pieces that were inked this month were done so with a G-pen nib and either Deleter Black 5 ink or Ph. Martin's Black Star matte ink. I've been learning how to ink with a pen nib for a while now, but I think this was the first time I went at it pretty constantly. I have a long way to go with it still, but I liked doing it this way for a few reasons. One, line variety: multiliners/microns don't give much variety in one tool, which sucks if you want to use line to help indicate form and shade. Variety also gives the line more life. Two, when you use ink this way, it doesn't erase like microns/multiliners! You have no idea how nice it is to lay a line down over pencils, erase, and it will still be just as dark as when you'd laid it down. Slow drying time and smudging are a pain, but I like having solid black.

:bulletblack: I can come up with some nice pieces. My favorite pieces out of this month are 022811 Blue Beetle and Mercury by Asatira, 022411 Mary Marvel 2 by Asatira and 020511 Dream by Asatira.

:bulletblack: I can also still come up with some lousy pieces. My least favorite pieces are from the first day, 020111 by Asatira (stiff, unreferenced, and poorly drawn) and 021211 Superman and Lois by Asatira (again, stiff and poorly drawn because I didn't know how to draw it). See...

:bulletblack: I really do need to use reference more often. There's two reasons for this. First, so I can draw something, be it fanart, original, or whatever, well. And in order to do that, I need to really understand what the heck I'm drawing. A number of pieces were more ambitious in my head, but I lacked the knowledge and confidence to draw them, so I settled for lackluster pieces. Heck, the best example of avoiding this would be my Blue Beetle and Sailor Mercury drawing; I spent at least an hour looking up how to draw BB, and used my webcam to try to draw the hands better, and I think that helped. Second, reference helps to keep the well from running dry, which I did pretty quickly.

So those are my thoughts about the challenge. I am largely pleased with it, although I have other disappointments. I wanted to use this as a time to get caught up on past projects, but still have to deal with that confidence thing. That said, this was a big boost for me. I've learned a little more about the media I use, and about how I work. Hopefully, I can use that to better approach said projects. While March is going to much slower than February, here's hoping I don't drop off the face of the earth art-wise. I plan to get back to more studies, and use the knowledge to improve my artwork. If you want to keep up with it, you can check out my art blog, link above. I'll be repeating it for the annual April Drawing. Until then, I'll be taking it a little bit more easy.

Over the Hump

Journal Entry: Mon Feb 14, 2011, 7:56 PM

Just thought I'd update to share my thoughts about how things are going. It's the 14th, the halfway point for the month, and I've been doing pretty good in keeping to my objective of a drawing a day. In a lot of ways, that pleases me. It's very rare for me to do this well on prior daily drawing challenges. Even for previous April drawings, I've missed days and couldn't keep up with it, often before the halfway point. This time, I'm actually making it. And a number of them are actually finished; not just inked, which is big, but colored with markers. I don't often get that far. And I have been fighting the urge to skip a day. I'm pretty sure it's only been out of sheer stubbornness that I've kept up with it. Go stubbornness!

Only a few disappointments. Namely, I've been slipping back into my tendency of doing portraits. I do like drawing portraits and heads, but they tend to be defaults and fall backs for me. They don't ask for much. Another thing is my failure to follow-through on reaching the ideas in my head. A few pieces, like Harley Quinn and year of the rabbit, are well below my intentions and aspirations. I wanted to do more complicated pieces, but I cut back because I don't know how to draw an Oriental style building, or I couldn't get pose right, or I can't draw clothes.

So, what's up for the remaining two weeks? Well, I'm going to try to put more effort into my pieces, slow down and take some time. Do some studies for the pieces instead of sitting down and drawing what comes to mind.Heck, I might plan the pictures a little more instead of hoping for an idea to come. Also, get back to doing learning studies (anatomy and clothing) that I've fallen off of doing these last two weeks. Namely, more effort and time. Will try for more dynamic and expressive character pictures, and maybe try a few more non-human focused pieces. Go for actual illustrations.

So, here's to the remaining two weeks. Hopefully more of the same, but better.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year

Journal Entry: Fri Dec 24, 2010, 9:31 AM

Merry Christmas, everyone! I hope everyone has a good holiday season. It's been pretty calm on my end. Mostly I've been thinking back over the last year and starting to look towards the next year. In a lot of ways, while it wasn't exactly the year I wanted, it was still a pretty good year, with more positives than negatives. While I'm not where I want to be--to be honest, I don't think anyone ever is--I'm grateful for where I am and where I can still go.

2010 Art Summary by Asatira
This is my year end summary of my gallery. One thing I like about it over the one I did for 2009 is I actually have more colored pieces, or finished pieces, than the last year's. For me, that is an improvement, which is all I can ask for.

Here's to more improvement and betterment for the next year! Have a happy new year!

Hey guys. I hope everyone had a good Thanksgiving holiday. I had a pretty calm one, smaller than usual, which was okay for us. Saw Tangled and I enjoyed it. I'm not much of one to gush, but I enjoyed it; not much else to say.

:iconclub-tutu: is currently voting for the November contest. Go check it out, and vote for ones you like.

Me? I'm looking forward to December. End of the semester, and hopefully a break. I'll still be working, but one job will be completed, and hopefully another. Hope to still be working with one company next year, but also time to start looking around.

Mostly, just kinda blah.

Busy November

Journal Entry: Sat Nov 6, 2010, 11:13 AM

Whew! A lot going on with life right now. I'm nearing the end of the semester, which means quick turn-overs with the last few papers I have to grade, as well as teaching the actual classes. Thankfully, I'll have Thanksgiving break to work on the last papers they turn in. In addition to my classes, I've got my usual editing work, which needs to be done on deadlines.

In addition to my real life responsibilities, I have to manage the cross-community secret Santa going on between Club-Tutu and <a href="…Princess Tutu LJ comm. Oh, by the way, today is the last day to sign up for it if you want to participate. Go here to get in on the party:… . In addition to that one, I'm also taking part in the secret Santa exchange going on over at And finishing up the prompt image(s) for Club-Tutu's current contest, and then get to work on my actual entry; so many options.

As I said, busy. Thankfully, November also means movies. I'll be checking out Megamind this afternoon, and Tangled is coming out at the end of the month. Hey, I'm a happy girl.

Sometime in the last 24 hours, I finally hit 10,000 pageviews for my gallery. That's a really nice milestone to meet. Not much to say other than I'm glad to finally be at 10K.

So, now what? Not much of one for doing kiribans, not on my own. How about this: first five to comment on this journal before next Friday get to request a free commission. Will go for an inked piece, may or may not color with gray markers.

Dragon*Con, Yay!

Journal Entry: Mon Aug 9, 2010, 11:11 AM

I am so excited. In less than a month, I'll be at Dragon*Con and hanging out with my friends. This year, I'm actually slipping into a fangirl mode that I haven't really been in the previous years. Unlike in the past, when I've never really been too interested in the guests, this time I really am. Don't get me wrong, I loved all the big name guests from last year, like Patrick Stewart, Leonard Nimoy, and William Shatner (yes, mild Trekker), and many others. I've just never been one to go meet them or getting autographs. I'm weird that way. But this time, there are comics stars I'm interested in seeing, namely Palmiotti and Amanda Connor, whose work on Power Girl I love. There's also a number of stars from my fave SyFy shows attending, Eureka and Warehouse 13. I am sorely tempted to create some fan art of the series. Not sure if I'd be anywhere near them, or if they'd be able or willing to accept, but I really do think it's high time I express my fangirlish nature for once! And something not Princess Tutu related.

So, what do you think? I'm open to some suggestions for Warehouse 13 and Eureka images. I am thinking of doing some Claudia-Fargo art; they are so cute together!

Tangled trailer

Journal Entry: Wed Jun 16, 2010, 12:42 PM

I'm sure by now most of you know about the website and trailer for Disney's next animated feature, Tangled. You can find it here:… Now, a few have posted comments about the look of the film (more of a discussion of the look of CG films in general), but I'm not interested in that. What I'd like are your initial thoughts about the film based on what you got from the trailer.

On my end, I'm not as excited about it as I was about The Princess and the Frog, admittedly because there was a lot more riding on Princess than on this one and how it is 2D versus CG animated; not that 2D is better than CG, just Princess was kind of a test to see if people still wanted 2D animation. That said, it looks nice from a visual standpoint, but it hasn't gotten my interest raised as much as I'd hoped. Probably because the trailer focuses so much on Flynn and not so much on Rapunzel, whom, for me, is who I'd think of as the main character. Flynn kinda comes off as a self absorbed guy who's a little caught up in his own badassery and cleverness, which turns me off. Of course, I can also see the film makers are aware of this and are playing with it; cue the "smolder" and how it looks like Rapunzel is rather unaffected by it. As often happens with first trailers, they focus on one thing or a few scenes, which can mislead the film goer. This happened with Princess and got better as more trailers and promos were released; ditto with How to Train Your Dragon. I hope future trailers will reveal a bit more about Rapunzel, the other characters, and the story. I can sort of see how the story is going to be a play on both Flynn and Rapunzel's interactions, his experience in contrast to her sense of wonder, and the outside antagonistic forces after them (the owners of the crown, those two guys after Flynn, and of course the witch/hag who imprisoned Rapunzel).

June update

Journal Entry: Mon Jun 14, 2010, 7:20 PM

Hello. I've been pretty quiet on all fronts. I had a nice vacation with the family to Florida late last month. Went to Walt Disney World with my bro.

I'm currently doing half day camps at the zoo and working on my paying jobs in the afternoon. Nice way to keep busy.

We also have a nice contest going on over at :iconclub-tutu:; the theme is light, and you can check out the rules here and the entries here… .

Not much else to say. Trying not to get stressed over little things I can't control. Looking forward to Toy Story 3 Friday. Woot! It looks like so much fun. I need a little something to lift me up.

New dA Look

Wed May 19, 2010, 8:07 AM

Yep, another person commenting about the new dA layout.

Honestly, it's okay. It's very open feeling, which is going to take some getting used to. The deviation view is WIDE (at least on my screen), and the floating direction tabs are a little distracting, if potentially useful or not. Biggest thing is the empty feeling you get from it.

So not great, not bad, just meh.

Edit: I don't like the stupid comments request when I fave. I get it, people like comments, some as much or more than faves. But you don't have to request it each time. Geh. Find I'm missing a few things from v.6. Still largely meh, but not loving it either.

Nearing the end of April

Wed Apr 28, 2010, 10:18 AM

It's the end of April, and that means it's time to vote again. Yep, time to head over to :iconclub-tutu: and vote on our current contest. The theme this month was the Samurai Era, so historical Japan, and we got a very good turnout this time around; 20 entries, which is pretty bloody good IMO. Head over to the latest update… to see all the entries, then go through the 3 polls to vote. Have to vote in all three to see the results and to get a pretty accurate count, and only vote for the entry you like best, the other two polls will have a blank vote.

April Drawing went pretty well except for last week. For some reason, I couldn't get myself to draw that week. Doing better now. Sorry, this year's attempt didn't have very much by way of polished pieces to put up. It happens sometimes.

Almost done with teaching for the term. Just got this week for finals and grading of said finals. I think it went well overall, I was more comfortable with it. I'm still looking for more work in the field of editing and tech writing, hopefully in addition to current work and the teaching in the fall. It's a bit weird to technically have a summer break, even if it's only from the teaching work and not the rest of the work (I like working, actually).

For those in school, good luck with your classes and finals. Summer's almost here.

Ah, a dA Tradition

Thu Apr 1, 2010, 8:10 AM

Not as cool as the mudkips. And I got stuck with a Team Jacob icon. Great. At least he's changing into a giant wolf and I get a fun sounding signature.

And thanks for those who gave me a llama badge. I'd give some by now, but my Internet seems to be slow today. May try later today.
