Japanese motif by arventur Japanese motif by arventur
I wanted to paint a beautiful Japanese girl in oriental surroundings.
I used photo reference for the building. I looked through the lots of pictures of geisha, but then I decided against painting a traditional geisha, they are too tidy and unnatural, while I wanted my girl to look emotional and passionate.

I know this was made a long time ago, but I just have to comment on how racist it is so anybody who stumbles upon it in the future will not consider this an accurate and acceptable depiction of Japanese women and Asian culture.

"I looked through the lots of pictures of geisha, but then I decided against painting a traditional geisha, they are too tidy and unnatural, while I wanted my girl to look emotional and passionate."

"too tidy and unnatural" That's an incredibly offensive thing to say about geishas. Way to shit all over a part of Japanese culture in four words- not like geishas are the only part of Japanese culture worth mentioning or the biggest part of it, of course. It's just one of the most common to be falsely depicted and fetishized. This woman in this painting could not be considered a geisha, nor an "untraditional geisha" as you seem to assume you designed her to be.

Also, the "absolutely amazing character design" comment in the DD description. Ah, yes, the wonderful racist depiction of a fetishized Japanese stereotype. By depicting Asian girls as you have here you are only influencing the spread of stereotypes, the awful fetishization of Asian women, and misinterpretations of Asian culture.

The anatomy is also very bad.

Some people will argue that I cannot say what is racist and what isn't as I am a white person, which I suppose could be a proper argument, not like the people arguing those things are ones to say what is and isn't racist either, and in response to that argument I kindly direct people to this blog: that has plenty of resources for people confused about why certain things are racist and if certain things are racist, run by actual Asians who have experienced racism first hand. It even has a link on what you do when you're called out and how to apologize about your wrongdoings!

Please read the FAQ and check the resources and other asked questions before inconveniencing the mods with questions they've already answered a million times, however, and PLEASE try to better yourself and your view and treatment of Asians through this. There are many other blogs and websites similar to that one as well, and I'd recommend you take a look at those too, because if you could even consider this a moderately acceptable interpretation of a "Geisha" and not racist in the slightest, then you probably think false and racist things about other races, as well.

To the artist of this piece, I'd advise you to research cultures much further (without horribly distorting the actual culture because you "didn't think it was beautiful enough") before drawing anything pertaining to that race and culture. Perhaps, in the years that have passed, you have since improved on your depiction of other cultures in artworks, but many people do not even make an effort to change their behavior because they never acknowledge that it's wrong in the first place. If that is the case, please heed this advice and make your best effort in the future to not make a racist depiction of another race and their culture ever again.

As a Japanese, I feel something strange........ I mean too oriental.. ?
but it is really good painting! nice!
xicara-de-chuva Featured By Owner Aug 31, 2013  Student General Artist
I think that's because using the word oriental to describe asian is racist
AoiWaffle0608 Featured By Owner Sep 1, 2013  Hobbyist Digital Artist
I am not racist. My English is not good, I couldn't find correct word to describe my opinion. Orient means East right? I didn't think the word was racial.
What I wanted to say is this art was a typical stereotype image of Japan.
If I made you mad sorry for that. :(
xicara-de-chuva Featured By Owner Sep 1, 2013  Student General Artist
No I don't think you're racist, I think the artist is though.

Don't be sorry for speaking up against something that makes you uncomfortable! Although, I think xicara-de-chuva may have been trying to say that the artist is racist for using 'oriental', not you.
Anyway, I agree with you, this art feels very fetishy and stereotypical :/

I can't believe so many people see it as beautiful when in fact it's anatomically doomed. Just look at the neck, the chin, the short left arm and breast... It doesn't look at all beautiful, it looks grotesque, with those flaws she looks like a 'take off head' doll... :/ I'm talking bout anatom. The rest is fine, i guess...

Where did you learn to paint such amazing details for the skin, fabric, the depth of the eyes and the hand details? You are sooooo talented and I can see the dedication and love you have for your art! My son and daughter both have art on the site, but I was here looking for Japanese art and came across this gorgeous picture which is my favorite out of your gallery. Best wishes! Linda
