Tylosaurus by arvalis Tylosaurus by arvalis
When I got the list of illustrations for this book, I was very excited to try my hand at the age-old trope of mosasaurs snatching pterosaurs. I had a lot of fun painting the waves, its not something I get the opportunity to do much. Its too bad for that Pteranodon though, probably not gonna work out well for you buddy. Its okay, giant lizards are way cooler than bird-bats with man bodies.

Earlier this year I had the opportunity to work on a new book called Monster Sharks: Megalodon and Other Giant Prehistoric Predators of the Deep and got to paint a bunch of fun prehistoric sea critters.

This is terrifyingly beautiful. The waves make it even more dramatic. I absolutely love the texture and the light on the tylo's skin.

Could mosasaurs intentionally beach themselves like orcas do? Theoretically speaking, I mean

I mean, they probably could....if some macropredatory cetaceans can do it I wouldn't be surprised if a giant macropredatory marine lizard could do the same. Still though, they would need be very careful and precise when doing so lest they risk stranding themselves and suffocating themselves under their own weight.

I just imagined that a predatory creature like tylosaurus would be able to do so but since it's size surpasses that of the modern orca, I was having some doubts. I suppose the smaller mosasaurs could do it though

Yes and no. The image of a marine reptile (most often a mosasaur, but sometimes a plesiosaur or an ichthyosaur) grabbing a pterosaur in flight is a very old one, and it seems to have originated with a painting by Zdenek Burian of a Tylosaurus leaping out of the water to try to catch a Pteranodon.

This is truly amazing. It's like the old epic XIX century paintings, but with up-to-date reconstructions. And the waves are magnificently done.
Great, just great. :)

Oh my god, you captured the vibe of real animals in the struggle of life, made the environment stunning, and everything, just splendid! Also, yeah, pteranodons aren't the most interesting thing to me either.

Aaahh this reminds me of Charles R. Knight's paintings in the best way!!
I love the bright shine going down the mosasaur's side!! Excellent touch!

I do believe you meant to say "giant lizards are just as cool as bird-bats with man bodies" ;)

Timing could not be more perfect for this art, 'cause it turns out Tylosaurus actually used their snouts to ram their prey like orcas, as shown from the structures on the skull after studies on one of a youngster
