After 140 hours, I am done with Monster Hunter illustration. I know it's fanart but this is my most intensely personal illustration in years. Rathalos is my favorite creature design, full stop. I did it, I did my boy proud.

I used this opportunity to push my skills to the limit and try many new things. I am super proud of the wing scales. Every single one was painted by hand and I even cropped out a third of them. The idea was like snake throats when the skin stretches between the scales.

MH has influenced my aesthetic sensibilities so much that I felt tremendous pressure to live up to it. This piece went through a million iterations over the 10 months I spent working on it. Art is so much harder when you care deeply about the subject.

I hope you can see how much this series means to me through this piece. Without this series I would be an extremely different artist.

The scales are truly a sight to behold; your dedication shows through in spades, and it really adds in a degree of almost tangible texture.

You did an amazing job of said scales on the wings, and I see exactly how you spread them out so they'd be able to constrict; well done. I really like how you applied the scales to the wings, and it would make them far more resilient, so they make perfect sense.

I also love his tongue; the barbs add in yet another layer of realism, allowing the wyvern to lick the meat off of bones, like a lion does.

More of a curiosity on my part, because I'm still new to MH, is the tip of his tail; it looks like a beak with a stinger coming out...which I've not seen yet. *Edit* I just never got a good enough look at his tail tip before, because it looks this way in just about every official artwork out there...thanks for showing me something I didn't know!

Seriously though, you did so, SO well on this.
