How to Draw Crocodiles by arvalis How to Draw Crocodiles by arvalis
I was asked if I could give any pointers on drawing crocodiles, and then this happened. This was supposed to be a warmup that proceeded to take up most of my day. I hope this is helpful to some of you. Please feel free to ask me questions if something is confusing. Also this isn't any one species, its just a general crocodile.

The snout feels a bit too alligator. Crocs' teeth are different and the snout more narrow and prominent. Otherwise, I love the ref and how it transitions. Great art!

I am unlucky enough to live where there is both crocs and gators..

There are many snout variations across crocodilians and this wasn't meant to be any specific species. Just general croc traits. If you live where there are both crocs and gators its probably american crocodiles which have very narrow snouts and teeth. Check out how robust saltwater crocs are www.outback-australia-travel-s…

Hey RJ, do you know where I could find good references on the muscular anatomy of reptiles? They seem harder to find than mammal and bird references.

There isn't really a good source. The best I can give you really is watching alligator skinning videos from gator farms.

without the musculature, this reminds me of that art tutorial meme - "now just draw the rest of the fucking owl!" haha

Bruh, could you do more of these if you find time to? This is great. Breaking it down like this reminds me how doable it is to draw something that requires a lot of particular details, like getting all the details is the hard part. I normally just freehand everything, and prefer to draw things by making them up as I go along, or else stuff I've drawn before.

Man, just more animals in general, I guess. Just the way you presented the info here makes it all seem pretty easy to learn this way once you practice with it.

Thanks for teaching me how to draw more realistic Crocodiles, though I can still try to draw cartoony crocodiles in my cartoon style, while I will give them some accurate features.

Great job! It is also a good reference for sculpting. In fact, the way you laid out the scales with the lines would work for laying out the scales on a sculpture.

Man if you ever made just a super rigorously accurate croc sculpt I would buy it in a heartbeat. There are so many croc toys out there but not a single one is close to accurate enough to have as a ref model.

I'll keep that in mind. I've never sculpted a legit crocodile before. Would be nice to do a non dinosaurian archosaur for a change.
