Ethiopian Dragon

Description

Last year I was fortunate enough to get the opportunity to work on a dragon book for Scholastic by way of Becker&Mayer Books. I got to take a crack at designing 16 different mythical dragons from all over the world for a book called Sink Your Teeth Into Dragons.

I really enjoyed coming up with a look for this Ethiopian dragon. Obviously with it being from Africa I wanted to draw inspiration from African animals like hippos, warthogs, and elephants. I feel like mammalian features are pretty rare in dragon design, mine included, so it was a fun change of pace. The Ethiopian dragon was also described as being so colossal that it could scoop up elephants no problem, which I hope I conveyed here. I tried to stick close to this inspirational illustration pictures.royalsociety.org/asse… so thats why I combined the arms and elbow wing things into folded pterosaur-like wings. As I'm sure you guys noticed, I greatly enjoy reinterpreting more simple drawings into fully detailed creatures.
