Vimes meets Toothless by artsytarts Vimes meets Toothless by artsytarts
Yay, minimalistically coloured sketch time!

Oh gosh, how can I start explaining this... Saw How To Train Your Dragon 2 last Friday, noticed dragons tend to like to sit on people, also re-discovered my love for the Discworld books... Add school project frustration to the mix, BAM! Crossover. Also, lol Commander Vimes does not wish to get dragon saliva onto his person. He's on his spare uniform and he knows it doesn't wash out.

Meanwhile, the rest of the Vimes family is delighted.

lol, it is a rather weird meeting, isn't it? XD Vimes is going to go spare on Hiccup when he finally catches up to Toothless.

Oh no, that's such a shame! D: I know how much that sucks. I missed Saving Mr. Banks by a day. I was so annoyed with myself.

Well, this is just about as cute as anything can possibly get! I just love the expressions here. Toothless, of course looks like he's just about to lick the guy, which will probably not go over too well. The kid looks like he's having a marvelous time and, the lady seems to be enjoying her ?husband's? misery...just a bit ;)

Thanks a lot! :D I don't know if you've ever heard of the Discworld books by Terry Pratchett. It's an amazing, clever and funny fantasy series with a huge load of different characters and story arcs. My favorite books by a long shot. And I've kind of gotten back into them recently. Haven't read one for ages! Anyway, these guys up there are Lady Sybil (Ramkin-Vimes) Sam Vimes (Full title: His Grace, His Excellency The Duke of Ankh; Commander of the Ankh-Morpork City Watch, Sir Samuel Vimes. Rather a mouth full and he hates it. XD He kinda keeps getting promoted against his will) and their son Sam. They always call him "Young Sam". ^^

lol, yeah Toothless is trying to do exactly that. Vimes will probably go all 'bad cop' on Hiccup (when he finally catches up to Toothless) and have a word with the boy. Thing is, dragons on the Discworld are all really small and tend to blow up when they get excited, so Young Sam never had the chance to actually ride a dragon. And he's having a whale of a time right now. And well... Lady Sybil is just really amused by the whole situation. There aren't many things that can floor her husband like that. :D And she's a real dragon fanatic. She not only breeds Swamp Dragons (the aforementioned small critters who blow up easily, but are really sweet and kind of sad), but she also has a sanctuary for sick and lost dragons. And well, I can imagine that she instantly took a liking to Toothless. I mean, look at that bundle of joy!

Ha ha! Dragons that blow up when they get upset! That's kind of funny and depressing at the same time. I watched a show where there was a pastry called Bibbibabkas and if you didn't sing a song when you make them they will expode.

They are unfortunate little creatures, but so sweet. Swamp dragons. I mean, look at them: www.geocities.ws/lord_azrael_1… (That picture was painted by the Discworld series' official illustrator, Paul Kidby. He paints all the book covers and official art. What a great job that must be).

I recently started listening to one of my Discworld audio books again and realized just how much I've been missing these stories. Discworld fanart is what got me into drawing in the first place. I mean, properly drawing, not just doodling cats. And Discworld fanart is also what introduced me to Deviantart. Aw I just love these books. They're endlessly funny and clever and exciting and... just brilliant. And there are also 3 TV movies. I dunno, if you're interested in reading one or watching one of the movies, I have a few recommendations :D

Oh, oh and I've watched the first episode of Gilligan's Island! That show is a little jewel, thanks for introducing me to it ^^ It's so much fun!

Awww.
Well, I do like dragons but not if there is magic in the story. So it would depend on that whether I would watch it or not. But it certainly sounds interesting.

YAY!! I'm so glad you like it! I thought you would. Gilligan's such a sweet little guy. A complete goofball and klutz, but a very lovable one. Who's your favorite so far?

Well there is magic on the Discworld, but it's more or less background noise. Actually, magic is mostly used for jokes or to make vampires, werewolves, golems, zombies and such creatures possible. What's most important though is that none of these creatures really follow the fantasy stereotypes. Which is what makes it so great for me. And it's not like it's the kind of magic where you go "Well, that doesn't make sense. Oh, it's magic? Ok, now it makes sense". It's terribly scientific and has clear limits. Like, you can't just, for instance, cunjure up a random object. The object has to come from somewhere. So that means if you cunjure something up, you effectively steal it from someone else. And you can't do it with big things, as it would simply not work. And most of the stories don't rely much on magic anyway. Or don't rely on it at all. There's the Watch series (with Commander Vimes and the gang) which deals with crime and social problems most of the time, the Moist von Lipwig series which deals mostly with technology and Rincewind of course, who is a wizard who can't actually use magic and keeps saving the world by accident.

What I'm trying to say is that it's not your usual fantasy Lord of the Rings type thing or Harry Potter wizardry book and that you should definitely give it a try. :D For the movies, I'd recommend watching "Going Postal". It's the newest movie and a very enjoyable watch. And for books, I'd recommend "Guards! Guards!", which is the first book from the watch series. And it's the book which features dragons the most by far. It does involve magic, but again only as a plot element. Vimes is actually very wary of magic and hates wizards, which makes for some funny scenes. Anyway, I'm done. See, if you get me going I can talk about it endlessly. XD

Gilligan is my favorite so far. :D I mean, who can't love that guy. He's so funny. And his facial expressions are pure gold.

From what you told me I wouldn't read them. Not crazy about vampires, zombies ect... but those dragons WERE pretty cute :) I love all the expressions! I'm not great at drawing dragons. Wish I could.

One of my faves is Gilligan vs Gilligan. A Soviet spy who is Gilligan's double comes to the island thinking there is some secret US experiment going on and tries to find out from the castaways whet that is by pretending to be Gilligan. Everyone thinks Gilligan has gone bananas because he is not acting like himself and Gilligan keeps trying to prove that it wasn't him. It's a pretty fun episode.

That's the thing, I'm not crazy about them either (though I do like me some wizardry). But Pratchett does a totally new take on them. They all break out of their stereotypes. Vampires who have sworn off blood, zombies who try to be good citizens, Dwarves who start a feminist movement. It's less about their species and more about their characters. There's even a 6 foot human who identifies as a dwarf XD.

But anyway, I suppose it's no for everyone. Should you ever change your mind though, you know where to find me. :D

That sounds hilarious! I'll tell you when I get there. I've started watching e second episode too and having a great time.
