Minerva: Chapter 1The Astrilian Capital of Everborn is home to many of the kingdom’s most prestigious families. One family, House Sparkmyre, is revered for producing prodigious children in a wide variety of fields, including militarily, religiously, artistically, and politically. Those who did not have such talent, especially girls of the household, had to be put to use in different regards, often married off to the son of another household. This is the story of Minerva, a daughter of House Sparkmyre who refused to let her family’s traditions bind her…The morning sun rose over the land that comprised Donner Manor, home of the prestigious House Sparkmyre. Most of its inhabitants had already risen to meet the day regardless of position, from the lord of the manor to the lowest ranking servants. Only one person in the building had yet to rise from their bed.A long groan echoed throughout one of the manor’s many bedrooms as a set of silk sheets rustled as they were thrown to one side of the four poster bed. A young girl, Minerva Sparkmyre, slowly sat up, yawning and stretching her arms, her eyes barely open.“Morning already,” she grumbled groggily to herself as she rubbed her eyes, which finally opened enough for her to see into her bedroom. Her vision first focused on the lavender curtains that surrounded the bed, lifting an arm to open one, getting blinded by sunlight immediately. She fell backwards onto her bed, her head crashing into a pile of plush pillows. She allowed herself to sink into the soft mattress before letting out a deep sigh. Her body resembled a star as she laid flat, silently begging for just a few more minutes of rest. Sleep had eluded her for most of the night, anxiety filling her mind for what today had in store for her.Her body felt like lead as she attempted to stand, taking a moment to sit on the edge of the bed so she could get her bearings. Once able to stand, she dragged herself over to a nearby vanity and plush red chair, plopping into the latter with a groan. She cringed upon looking in the mirror, gray bags occupying the space just under her green eyes. Her blonde hair resembled a bird’s nest resting on her head. Some of the tangles looked like rope knots, which could take hours to brush out. All night she tossed and turned, the hot summer night doing nothing to comfort her. Today was the latest in a long line of lunch dates her father had arranged with another noble house. Before thinking more on her restless night, knocking echoed from the oak door behind her before opening, revealing a brunette woman. This woman was clad in a long black dress with a white apron, accented with gold streaks, the standard uniform of the manor’s maid staff. The maid bowed. “Lady Minerva,” she spoke in a soft, polite tone, “Lady Malota is here to see you.”Minerva let out a soft gasp, stuttering, “O-Oh, um… Yes, send her in.” She grimaced as she finished those words, realizing that she had woken up much later than her older siblings and father typically did.The maid bowed once more, stepped aside, and left to let a woman a few years older than Minerva into the room. This woman looked almost exactly like Minerva, albeit slightly taller and older. A blue and white silk-dress draped her body. Her blonde hair was perfectly set from the top of her head to the ends that grazed her shoulders, the locks clean and almost shining. She carried a dignified air about her, one that befit the daughter of a nobleman. But, she looked upon her younger sister with a soft and kind smile.“Oh sister,” she giggled softly as she walked to the vanity, resting her hands over Minerva’s shoulders. “You look like you have just woken up.”“Because I did,” Minerva grumbled before another yawn escaped from her lips. She covered her mouth towards the end of it. “I barely slept a wink last night.”“It has something to do with the lunch date father scheduled between you and Marquess Dorian’s son today, I presume?”Minerva rubbed a hand over her face, letting out a sigh before groaning. “Yeah. He’s been even more adamant on me getting married recently. This is the fourth boy this month!”“Fifth. Remember Count Benson’s son?”“Right, he was probably the worst of my potential ‘suitors’ so far. Why can’t he just let me marry when I’m ready, Malota? I’m only thirteen for heaven’s sakes! She ran her hands through her messy blonde hair, tugging at the roots in frustration before feeling Malota’s hands squeeze her shoulders softly, helping the younger sister to relax. “I’m sure father will stop before long,” the older sister spoke soothingly. “There’s only so many noblemen with sons in Astril.”“I hope he stops soon, otherwise I’ll go insane.”Malota giggled at her words before leaning over, giving her sister a gentle kiss on the temple. She then took a step back, bowing to her, “I wish I could stay and help you prepare, but I have to leave for the temple today. Best of luck to you, dear sister.”Minerva gave a partial bow from her seat as she watched her sister leave. Once gone, she scoffed, “Great advice as always, Malota.” She almost knocked her chair over as she stood up, moving to her bathing room to prepare for the day ahead. She forced herself to go through her morning routine, starting with her bath. She shivered as she stepped into the marble tub, lowering into ice cold water. At first, the cold water felt good against her warm body, especially after the hot, sleepless night she sweated her way through. After a few minutes, she began to shiver violently, her skin sharply prickled with goosebumps from the icy chill. Despite wincing from the pain of the cold, she made no effort to warm the water, instead soaking as much of her body as possible.Maybe if I catch cold, father will have to call off the lunch date, she thought before plunging her face under water. She remained in the tub for almost a half hour before stepping out, confident that her plan would succeed. That confidence shattered when she saw sunlight surrounding her, helping to warm her. She looked up with a groan, remembering the skylight that presided over the very spot she stood. She cursed under her breath before drying herself. While she still held hope that even a sneeze would develop, her faith was fleeting with each passing moment. At this point, she wouldn’t be surprised if the cold developed after the lunch date. She eventually moved into her closet, looking amongst the wide variety of outfits available to her. Eventually, she decided on a yellow silk dress similar in design to Malota’s.Once dressed, she returned to her vanity, taking a yellow comb through her hair. She winced as she battled the tangles remaining until they were freed. Finally, she removed a powderpuff from a drawer, applying some of the powder to her face to disguise the bags under her eyes. As she finished, knocking again echoed from her door before opening. Instead of a maid, a tall white-haired man entered, dressed in the black suit that was standard uniform for the manor’s staff of butlers. The white of his hair and beard were the only indications of his age, as he was tall with broad shoulders, a sign that he was quite muscular in his younger days.“Lady Minerva,” his voice was gruff, yet soft and polite, “Your father wishes to see you in the courtyard. Are you finished preparing?”She turned upon hearing his voice, smiling at him for a moment before frowning, sighing at the mention of her father. “Yes Seba, I just finished my makeup.”“I shall accompany you, if you wish.”“If it’s no trouble, I would love that.”He held the door for her as she walked out of the room, closing it before walking beside her. As they ventured through the halls, they were greeted by the many servants employed by House Sparkmyre. While Minerva greeted them in a kind manner, Seba could sense the anxiety in her mind. The two shared this walk for many months, yet this time felt different.Normally, her anxiety came with a side of irritation. While both of those were present, he could see something else through her eyes and body language. Whatever he saw prompted him to turn to her, breaking the silence.“Milady, is everything alright?” He did not receive a response at first, an excuse for him to continue, “You seem more nervous than usual.”“Yes, I’m fine,” She responded bluntly, refusing to return the glance. Her response confirmed his suspicions, sighing before continuing, “You seem afraid, milady.”His words caused her to sigh as well, finally meeting his gaze. “It’s that obvious, huh?”“I could inform your father that you’re not feeling well, if you wish.”“No, he’ll see right through it. I just want to get this stupid lunch date over with.”Seba took a moment to respond, stroking his beard as he seemed to process her words. “It’s Lord Alexander who you’re afraid of, isn’t it?”Minerva suddenly stopped upon hearing his words, staring at the ground with clenched fists. Silence fell over them both, a sign that Seba’s words had truth to them. After a minute, Minerva confirmed his question with a nod. She looked around before getting close to the tall butler, whispering, “He seems to have gotten more and more agitated with each suitor I’ve turned down. Who knows how long before things between me and him reaches its worst point. The argument we had last week was quite ugly.”“Ah yes, I do recall that,” the Butler responded, his tone suggesting a very subtle hint of sarcasm. “The vase you broke on the way to your room suggested you were quite upset. All the noise woke little Maria from the nap she was taking as well.”She rose her head at his comment, unable to help but smile slightly. Whenever he made these sorts of comments to her, it was always to try and make her smile. The moment helped to ease her anxiety somewhat. As they resumed their walk, she quickly broke the ice once more, “Everything father’s been doing has been because I don’t have prodigious talent like Mikolas and Malota. Seba, do you think I’ll ever find what my talent is?”Both times she said the word “talent,” she furrowed her brow, almost forcing herself to say the word. Talent… That was a word Minerva came to despise more than anything in this world.Talent was a word held in the highest regard to House Sparkmyre, which produced prodigious children in a wide variety of fields. The current patriarch, Lord Alexander Sparkmyre, was a member of the high council that serves directly under Astril’s king. After Alexander came his only son and the eldest of his four children, Mikolas Sparkmyre. By the age of seven, young Mikolas was matching and sometimes besting the most powerful swordsmen in the realm. Now he is a member of Astril’s Royal Knights, rising through their ranks in record time at only nineteen.Next was Malota, the eldest daughter. At the age of six, she began to study the art of magic. It took little time for her to stun the greatest mages in the realm with how quickly she learned spells and performed holy rituals. She currently serves as one of the top priestesses in Everborn’s cathedral, doing so at the ripe age of eighteen. Then there was Minerva. Due to the quick ascension of both Mikolas and Malota, Alexander’s expectations for his third child were astronomically high. To his misfortune, Minerva’s training in magic, the arts, and music among other fields ranged from average to disastrous. Due to tradition, any daughter of House Sparkmyre who did not wield extraordinary talent was to be married off to another noble house. Today’s lunch date was yet another effort to make Minerva’s lack of apparent talent the problem of another household.“I don’t see why you can’t ever find your talent,” Seba nodded, smiling, though his carefully-styled beard made it hard to see. “There is such a thing in this world as a late bloomer. In fact, I fit into that category myself.”“You, the greatest butler in the history of Donner Manor? A late bloomer? I don’t believe that for a second!”“It’s true, milady. It took me years to become competent in my craft. In my younger days, I was quite poor at my job, to the point that I left the profession for a few years.”“Like a break? What did you do during that time?”He stopped in front of a large door decorated in large glass panes that led outside, staring at it for a moment. His head shook from side to side, glancing back at her. “With all due respect milady, now’s not the time to talk about me. We have arrived.”He opened the door for her, walking out into a lavish courtyard surrounded by greenery of all kinds. From perfectly trimmed bushes to rows of flowers blooming in plethora of colors, the courtyard looked like something out of a masterful painting. The two soon arrived to the garden’s center, where a round table was set. Several servants came and went as the table was being prepared, being overseen by one man whom Minerva and Seba approached. The man turned to them, his green eyes locking onto Minerva’s face, taking a few steps towards her.“Minerva,” The man spoke with a low, chilling voice, slicking his graying black hair back with one hand. “You’re late.”Before she could respond, Seba gave the man a respectful bow, a hand over his heart. “Forgive us, Lord Alexander. Lady Minerva was having difficulty getting her bathwater properly warmed, which led to a delay in her preparations.”She couldn’t help but smile, knowing that he was lying. With his articulate tongue, as well as her father’s trust in him, he could spin almost anything into a believable tale.“I see,” Alexander responded as he slowly turned his head, looking around the garden as if searching for someone. “Fortunately, Marquess Dorian is running behind as well. Consider yourself lucky, Minerva.”His stern voice caused tension in her shoulders, dread once more filling her mind. That anxiety grew worse as they turned to see a young man approach. She swallowed saliva as she noticed the blue doublet, trimmed with gold. The left breast possessed a peculiar purple mark, resembling a raven in flight, the symbol of Astril’s noble House Dorian.“Speak of the devil,” Alexander quipped as he gazed at the young man, extending an arm to shake his hand. “It’s an honor to have you join us today, young Mordred. May I ask where your father is?”“The honor is all mine, Lord Sparkmyre,” Mordred responded, a calm, refined tone to his voice. He answered with his own outstretched arm, resulting in a firm handshake between them. “I’m afraid my father couldn’t make it out today. He had something arise at the last minute and sent me alone.”“Such a shame, since I haven’t seen your father in years, but it can’t be helped,” Alexander sighed before shrugging. He then stepped aside, allowing Mordred to make eye contact with Minerva. Both men smiled, Alexander with perceived pride, Mordred with curiosity. “Mordred, allow me to introduce to you my second daughter, Minerva.”That left Minerva forcing herself to smile as she gave Mordred a short bow. Whatever she was thinking, it was interrupted as the young noble walked up to her. A squeak escaped her lips as she looked up, realizing the size difference between them as he loomed over her. Not only did he seem to be at least a foot taller, but looked to be a few years older, causing her anxiety to grow.He must have realized how imposing he appeared to her, prompting him to kneel before her, bringing his face just below hers. To her surprise, he suddenly lifted her left hand up to his face, cradling it in his hands gently. He slowly pressed his lips against the back of her hand, leaving a kiss before releasing it.“It’s a privilege to meet one of the daughters of House Sparkmyre,” he spoke with an almost regal tone. “Your beauty goes beyond what I was told.”His words and actions caused Minerva’s cheeks change, gaining a deep crimson flush. Her mind raced as she tried to respond, eventually stuttering, “Th-Th-The pl-pleasure’s all mine…”Aside from the fact that he was eldest of all the potential suitors she’s met thus far, he also seemed the most mature. The other sons of Astrilian nobility were either snobbish, arrogant, narcissistic, or a combination of the three. Mordred was different, as evidenced by his polite greeting and romantic gesture.Despite trying to keep her composure, her blush was bright enough to guide a ship at sea. It was difficult for her to keep focus due to being so impressed by Mordred’s conduct. He was a perfect gentleman, perhaps a man that she could be content with as her husband. Until…End of Chapter
