The landscape are hoodoo's from 'Writing on Stone' Provincial Park in Alberta, Canada - some artistic license taken.
The jawbone, which bears resemblance to a mediaval galleon, has been recently resurrected in the digital work Jawbone Journey.

i am enthralled by the jawbones! and the background also looks like utah, even though it is from canada!

we have a few badlands here in Alberta. The better known one is by Drumheller. Great fossil finds there (Dinosaurs), but also at the Milk River Ridge, where this scene is from.
