And that'd be considered a small rungworld :P

Ya, the one as large as a niven ring would be way larger :)

I can't even imagine the work and engineering involved in something like this let alone the time it would take to complete it.

Ya, it would be insane. But cool if it happened.

I remember reading a book called "Ring World" when I was younger. I thought then that it would be impossible to construct something of the magnitude of the thing but as time goes by I am less and less surprised at what the human race is capable of. Who knows. perhaps something like this would be possible in a few lifetimes the groundwork already being begun in small ways even now. I won't live to see it but what a thought!

If we manage to avoid killing ourselves, I think we will see stuff like this happen, but ya, we wont' be around by the time those goals are reached. But perhaps we can be a part of the original inspiration :)

Stricking picture ! Imagine the view from the surface just under. Not sure that would make up for the 'little' shadow issue :| (Blank Stare)
Joke aside, it's a good illustration of the concept. Previous one over - or around? - a gazeous planet was already great but it is more powerful with an Earth analog.
Fine job, as always.

Thanks! Ya, decided if I was going to do a second illustration, would be a different one surrounding a different type of planet. Plus, it probably ressonates more when it's something similar to our earth. Should probably do one that's got a star at the centroid at some point :)

I wonder how much it would actually cost to build such a structure? Because outside of massive ring colonies, I think this is the only thing that's going to be mankind's only salvation.

The cost would be enormous I suspect, we'd certainly need to destroy a planet or two to get the raw materials :)

Could it be done through asteroid mining for the raw materials?

Yes, although transporting them to orbit would certainly be an undertaking

How big would each cylinder be, you would imagine? Or the rung supports?

Each cylinder is supposed to be a McKendree cylinder, each of which is 460 km (290 mi) in radius and 4600 km (2900 mi) in length. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/McKendre…

That's about the size of the USA going coast to coast. Damn that's big!

yup. This painting is of a planet similar to earth, but not earth, since the scale would be quite wrong
