I wanted to kick off 2019 by being honest about my art and recognising I need to get better.

I'm pleased with the progress I've made in recent years but know I need to share ideas with other artists (who are better than me in order for me to level up). Looking at you :iconstazjohnson: :iconblasterkid: :iconmrriktus: :iconmatteoscalera: :iconmmontiel: et al ;-) (PS if I've missed you off this list of people it doesn't mean I don't love your art...)

However getting better at something I'm working might help others at all levels so I'm going to leave these thread live on my DA page. Feel free to share ideas on the subject by commenting on this thread or linking to other resources such as your You Tube channel or blog.

So for the first thing I know I need to get better at...

Crowd scenes in comics!

Now I do understand perspective (to an extent, I'm not David Chelsea) but compositing a complex crowd scene is hard.

Yep I know about having the horizon line cut through figures at the same place to keep everyone in perspective (assuming same height) but there's just so much more to composting the shape and centre of interest for the panel purpose on the story, spotting blacks, balancing mass of crowd with detail, architectural details of backgrounds etc.

How do you tackle a complex crowd scene panel? What approaches have you refined to make life and deadlines possible when drawing rich rewarding crowd scenes?

I'm back on DA with a purpose. I've been on Instagram for much of this year. There are a lot more people on Instagram but I miss the conversations with other artists. I also miss taking more time to talk rather than the constant rush on Instagram.

And the reason for wanting to talk more about art is that I want to get better.

This year saw the release of my first book and I'm working on vol.2 for 2019 release. I've learned a lot but there's lots more to learn so I'm connect and share ideas with creators trying to improve their art, their writing and the medium of comics and cover illustration.

Here's to talking art. Cheers.

It’s 6 years since I joined Deviant Art and started giving my art more time again. I’ve learned a lot from the community of artist here and finally here is my first book.

If you want to pick up a copy you can get it at Amazon in US and across Europe. Search “Tide Debut”. Here’s the links

If you are the UK you can also get it in Leeds from www.travellingman.com/

A great shop. Give them a call.

Feel free to share with friends who might like it.

and thank you
