Visual Lit Final - Suberting Beauty: Cultural by artisticTaurean Visual Lit Final - Suberting Beauty: Cultural by artisticTaurean
This is one of the image manips I did for my Visual Literacy final. We had the choice of writing a 6-8 page paper or making a visual argument that was the equivalent of 6-8 pages. I chose to make a magazine of sorts aimed at taking what the media portrays as ideal and challenging it. I chose to focus on six different types of beauty: Cultural, body-positive, older, androgynous, unique, and natural. I took ads out of the May 2014 Cosmopolitan magazine, scanned them in, and got to work in Photoshop. :D (Big Grin)

This is the first one I did. It was inspired by a field trip to Washington, DC in another class. We had to roleplay as a member of a group we're not part of, and I chose to wear hijab that day along with two others. I wanted to see what it would be like to walk around, mainly to see what Muslim women who wear the hijab have to go through. Nothing really happened that day. I blame DC being a large and accepting city. ^^;

When I got started with this project, I saw this ad and thought, "Why don't we ever see women of other cultures in these ads/magazines?" So I found a couple of headscarves and put them onto Zoe Saldana and Blake Lively. XD; But the ad is about the makeup, so why does the hair matter? Aren't these women still beautiful?

I'm not overly fond of the text I put on it, and the scarves themselves look pretty bad, but the images I took them from were MUCH smaller than the finished product and had to be blown up. My other manips are much better than this one (as already shown by the Slim Fast one I already posted).

Original ads are of course NOT mine and were only altered for educational purposes!
