Creating A Species: A guide and helpful tips.
Introduction
Creating a species isn't the easiest thing to do, and I know. I've made multiple species before. You may not know it, but design isn't the only thing that matters in creating a species. Just like humans, and fairies, and dragons: there's a lot more to a them than what they look like. What they eat, and maybe even what they believe in plays a big role on the species' life style. This guide/tutorial here is for fantasy creatures, but I guess this guide/tutorial can help you out anyway. I hope this guide/tutorial can help you out on creating a species!
Making the species.
The Name.
Now, I have to say, this is the hardest part of creating a species. I'm not going to get too much in detail with this, but it's rare that I use random letters, or well, to an extent at least. It's nice to have a name that "rolls off the tongue", or sounds nice when one says it. Which means that it wouldn't be good to have somethi

Species Design Guide
DESCRIBE THE ENVIRONMENT
What is the weather like?
Is it mountainous, more like a plain? Describe the landscape and be as detailed as possible.
What is it rich in? And lacking in?
Anything else you want to add?
SURVIVAL
How do they get water? How often and how much of it do they need? This has to do with evolution of the species. (if your species does not require water to survive, explain)
What is their food source? How do they gather, harvest, or hunt it? Establishing their diet is important in shaping their lifestyle, so be thoughtful with your response.
Are they nesters, building a home in a permanent place, or are they nomadic? If nesters, in what sort of home do they dwell? How are they built or prepared? Where, geographically, do they choose to place their housing? If nomadic, what keeps them on the move? Are they following something or avoiding something? How do they find shelter when they stop to rest?
Are there other species they compete with for survival? (such as for resourc

My Advice on Species Creation
So, this is for anyone looking to create a species. Let me just tell you that this isn't the be all and end all of species creation, this is just my own experiences and the advice I have for others looking to tread a similar path.
Let me begin by saying, if you're looking to do a species thoroughly (And I would highly recommend doing so), it's going to take more than a day. Sometimes even a month or more. So don't be annoyed if the process seems lengthy, it's all worth it at the end.
Secondly, if you're only looking to make an adoptable species, I would advise against doing so. The best species are made because the owner made them for themselves. Make something you will want to use and perhaps other people will feel the same way. But I think you should begin in the mindset that this is a species for your sole purpose and decide whether you want others to have them later.
To Begin
I think the first question you're going to have to ask yourself is, are they magic users
