Laura’s Bio

Laura Buxton Check, AKA Czech (Condensed Biography)

“Every creative act involves…a new innocence of perception, liberated from the cataract of accepted belief.”

—Arthur Koestler
The Sleepwalkers

A creative person is one who can process in new ways the information directly at hand — the ordinary sensory data available to all of us.

It is interesting to me that in the brains of animals, the cerebral hemispheres (the two halves of the brain) are essentially alike, or symmetrical in function. Human cerebral hemispheres, however, develop asymmetrically in terms of function. I enjoyed painting animals for a while from the owner’s description of their personality and viewing various photos of my subject.

Forgers copy signatures upside-down. This trick probably works for the same reason that upside-down drawing works. I have always used a mirror, turned my painting around each angle and have seen bright colors in my mind (purposely transformed) to add excitement within the piece.

My classes taken in art were up and down the coast of California. I grew up in southern California and spent half my life there. I spent the other half of my life here in the redwoods of northern California.

I’ve always used my hands in life whether it be designing my own Zen garden, interior interest in my home, being a licensed orthodontic assistant, licensed manicurist, private secretary, hand signals professionally showing Golden Retriever dogs or using a brush to paint artwork. I took a paralegal course in trusts, deeds, wills and estates to step away!

With a library full of artistic traditional books, I as all artists—have my own expression and desires. My work evolved from impressionistic, abstract, monotype, and oriental watercolours with ink, painting clothing, and transfer to tile art or just plain being creative on ceramics for the fun of it.

I enjoyed painting people’s personality in abstract form after they supplied information of their favorite music, (which I would listen while painting) their choice of colors, (not necessarily using them in the painting) the person’s hobbies, lifestyle, interests, their work and all positive selective data.

I sincerely thank the people all over the USA who have taken an interest in my work for decades, following my changes and purchased my paintings. I’ve recently traveled extensively through Europe to gather more cultural, personal and creative inspiration.

Thank you for such a warm welcome in what is looking increasing like a most cold and calculated world.  People here aren't pluged-in or tuned-out.  Yes, this is the best kind of addiction.  Again, thanks to any and everyone who wishes to make everything a better place and much more interesting.  Kindness does go a "long way these days."    Regards.
