Dwarf Tunnel Fighters by Artigas Dwarf Tunnel Fighters by Artigas
Those warriors sport a standard gear for the dwarfkind that would be equivalent of a Thane's amongst men. Such is the wealth and skill of the dwarves.

The supporting splints of the shield radiating out and creating an octagonal shape is such a strong design element, it really emphasises the strong geometric shapes and lines that you and other artists depicting dwarves use in their material culture. It also makes for a cool looking shield! Love it!

Thanks my friend, I appreciate that.
The geometrical stile fits the dwarfs in my view because of their fondness for rocks (that can be jagged and sharp angled) and their tendency to carve them. They would know a lot about planes and angles for sure.

Excellent work on these splendid harnesses Master Sergio; I keep going back-and-forth on whether or not the Dwarves would prefer to rely on their superbly-crafted armour and dispense with shields altogether (as being a trifle cumbersome in tunnel fighting) but I love the look you have given these two keystones in some Dwarvish Shield-Wall!Nod

Games Workshop produced miniatures of Dwarven tunnel fighters for their Lord Of The Rings tabletop wargame that had a really cool, functional idea. Two-dwarf teams, the dwarf in front with a large, pavise-like shield which had special slots/supports for the long spear of the dwarf in the rear position - the idea being that these teams would basically be an unstoppable force or immovable object moving down or holding up a section of tunnel, taking advantage of the confined space to present the enemy with a shield that fully obstructs the passage, as well as the danger of being hit with a thrust from the spear. I hope I'm illustrating this effectively.

I've actually seen those models and rather liked them.

I agree with Artigas : lore-wise Dwarves use shields and I'm not a medieval fighter but I would think that taking a blow or an arrow on a shield is much easier than taking it on yoursel even with an armour. :)

That actually depends on the armour; after the invention of Full Plate knights ceased to carry a shield for all practical purposes simply because their shiny new harnesses effectively made them redundant.Nod

I tend to favour maille instead of plate because it is canon and contributes to this dark ages flavour tolkien gave his work.
I am not a big fan of the over the top larger than life videogame Peter Jackson approach

I like to see Creators take a number of different approaches to the same Setting, so I am as glad to know that you are Happy to make the effort to distinguish your take on Middle Earth from that of Sir Peter Jackson et al as I am to watch their own take on THE LORD OF THE RINGS and THE HOBBIT!Nod

So do I my friend. I really enjoyed LOTR and to some extent The Hobbit as well.

It amuses me to realise that I might well belong to the very last generation which encountered the books before the films (the latter being a most POTENT gateway drug leading into the worlds of Classic Fantasy and the Epic); I actually read THE HOBBIT first and took a little while to be convinced that I should read its sequel.:D (Big Grin)

Thanks for the compliments my friend. I am delighted.
I have wondered the same. I think though that shields have been remarked in the books so many times that I kept them. Also historically there were very few occasions where shields were dismissed.

Very True; barring the depiction of Full Plate as the default in Middle Earth (an idea that I tend to disagree with, although not one that I absolutely refuse to accept) it makes sense that shield-and-mail would be the best protection available (although I still suspect that Dwarves might prefer to use relatively small shields underground, if only because Goblin tunnels would probably vary in width rather more than the passages between Dwarf-Halls).
