Crow by arthawk87 Crow by arthawk87

Do not use in any way without my written permission!

... at least I think it's a crow. Might be a raven, but I've never been any good at distinguishing the two.

So anyway, I did this in art therapy during my internship at a psychiatric hospital. I used a picture from a magazine as reference. Done with crayons (black, white, blue), coal, and white gouache paint.

I don't know why, but somehow I always end up drawing birds when I don't know what else to do ...

I have always had a thing for drawing and painting of birds. What I think brings it all together is the background. Crows and Ravens are generally strong birds, and I think your illustration really represents that. Two of my favorite parts of birds are the feathers and eyes, both you drew perfectly. some artist tend to draw bird feathers or eyes too shiny, or the eyes too dull, and you seemed to find the perfect balance between the two. I wish I could tell you if it is a Crow or a Raven, but I honestly do not know XD
What do you think?

I don't know what bird is this, raven or crow, but it looks marvelous! Wonderful, cold colours and superb details. I love the choice of paper :)

Vielen Dank :D!

Wonderful Crow, it's very lively colored but dead looking. I guess all crows are like that?

Thank you. I don't know if crows are generally dead looking, but I think here it could be because it's not embedded in an "environment" like on the reference picture. Maybe if I had drawn some trees or something in the background that would have made it more lively?

I'm going birdwatching today, so, I'll get back to you on weather crows actually look as dead as you potray them

Well, yes and no.
Your drawing is a raven.
Not a crow.

Believe me,
I sure do know.

Wow. Franzilla, this is gorgeous. I love love LOVE the contrast between the crayons (CRAYONS!? what kind is it??) and the nature coloured paper. How big is it?

And also, what is the difference between gauche paint and acrylics, in your opinion? I've been curious about gauche for a while but don't know if I like the results most of time. Thoughts?

Did you draw this from a picture or from memory? Either way, it's lovely. I love birds, and I love when you surprise me with something new like this. It's awesome. I'm going to call her Petronia (and no, I don't know why ... is it even a name?).

Thanks for your lovely comment! I think I used neocolor, but I'm not sure. The bird is about 14.5x11cm. The paper is much wider than on this scan, but not all of it fit in my scanner so I just ... left it that way. Didn't have the patience to doctor with it in PS, too much time went into doing that with the Derek drawing. I found the reference picture in a magazine, I think it was a national geographic. We had a lot of those in art therapy

I think the difference is that gouache is still watersoluble when it's dry, which acrylics aren't. So you can't paint layers with gouache because they will smear. I have some gouache and some acrylic paints at home, but so far I only used the acrylics (but that's only because I wasn't aware of owning gouache paint :D. I only discovered them when I cleaned up and rearranged my art supplies).
