Alfred Wallace by ArtemisiaSynchroma Alfred Wallace by ArtemisiaSynchroma
"Alfred Russel Wallace, (8 January 1823 7 November 1913) was a British naturalist, explorer, geographer, anthropologist and biologist. He is best known for independently proposing a theory of evolution due to natural selection that prompted Charles Darwin to publish his own theory."
(from Wikipedia)

Watercolor, pen & ink, ink wash

This piece was not originally started as part of my ongoing series of biologists and naturalists. It's a commission for Toni, the woman who had my Darwin illustration tattooed on her leg. Wallace is going to be a companion piece for the other leg.

A framed print of this piece will be included with my series on display at Irvine Nature Center (www.explorenature.org) in Owings Mills, MD from May 18-July 30, 2011.

The opening for the three artist show, entitled "Delicate Visions: Rebecca Clark, Joanna Barnum and Elaine Brandes," will take place on Friday, June 3, 5-7pm.

Prints available of any of the images in this series, directly through the artist- joanna at joannabarnum dot com

Oh geez, I love this. I just had a vision of him walking into an old school university lecture like this, with frogs all over his face. XDD Oh, the lulz.

Wallace did a lot of his research on flying frogs. The particular ones in the painting are named after him.
