EDIT:
Oh my! A DD just hours after submitting this? :faint: I did not see that coming!
Thank you SO MUCH to ~nellies for suggesting it, and `brgtt for featuring!
And thanks to all of you for the favs and the comments, I really appreciate them.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Correct category should be:
Digital Art / Vector / Surreal
or
Digital Art / Vector / Conceptual

Anyway, this is a very personal piece and it's going to be a gift for someone who helped me a lot during a healing process. :)
And although it's not the idea I had in mind in the first place, I'm really happy with the result.

The stock used is by the FABULOUS ~katlovestock who kindly provided me a high res image of this photo:
 [link]

I also used ^ChewedKandi's immense [link](Neon Glow Brushes) and [link](Bokeh Brushes) AND (this is important) I created my own feather brushes inspired by her own awesome feathers, that you can see in pieces like [link](Heaven Tomorrow) or [link](No Parents Tomorrow). I didn't wanted to copy them, and of course these aren't half as good as yours, but at least I'm trying. I'm sure you'll understand that you are an enormous inspiration and I'm not plagiarizing your work. Thank you for sharing your resources, your wips, and your awesome self with the rest of the vector community. You certainly helped me a lot to come where I am now.
I would also like to thank *DomiSM for her constant feedback while uploading WIPs of this!

Steps, as always, in my scraps:

I know this is a very personal piece for you and the sheer emotion and work you've put into this shows.

Lets look at the concept... healing. I'm finding it a little hard to really place the healing concept on this piece. It's not until you analyse the piece that you can truly add the elements together. The vectored contradiction.

I can see a sense of being low, depressed... blue... and this is not just through the colour scheme. It's through the hiding ones face, feeling so insecure that you don't want to be seen.

What I find is the contradiction... yes you have this person who is afraid and is hiding... yet you have signs of someone who wants to be exposed, who wants to just show off. This is present with the almost peacock like show of feathers. Although the overally colouring is blue, it's a peacock blue. Yes I want to show off, but maybe I'm afraid of how I'll be seen.

As a conceptual piece, full marks... it makes you think, it makes you see past the hidden portrait. Well done.

Technic wise, there are a couple of elements I feel you could have worked on a bit more. The problem with using brushes for such a huge part of this (the hair/feathers) is that you have to make sure that this element is perfect as the slightest imperfection is then replicated over and over again.

I think adding a little highlight line to the feathers along the stem of the feather in the original brush would have helped them look a little less flat and some highlights in the finer details may have also helped.

With the feathers being so close up, I would have been tempted to create 2-3 different sorts of feather brushes to give them a little bit more variety also.

You've definately evolved your own style of skin shading. You use a lot of dirty tones, specially around the skin creases and edges which I now associate with your style. Bravo on that! I think with a little bit more time in the more intricate areas - such as the hands - would work in your favour.

The overall composition works really well but I can't help feeling that you could have worked a bit more on the background... compliments to who ever created the brokeh brush there haha - just kidding!

Keep going, I'm enjoying the path you're on and well done on your second DD <img src="e.deviantart.net/emoticons/h/h…" width="38" height="15" alt="" title="Hug"/>

I know what you mean about the brushes (in fact, I did created 2 or 3 brushes, but I guess they weren't different enough :P). I'm still learning how to create brushes, so I'll take your advices for the next time :)

I'll have to disagree on the background aspect though... The reason why it doesn't have more work is not because I'm lazy, I kept it simple on porpouse to keep the focus on the figure, and not creating distractions (specially when the figure has complex elements like the feathers)... "Less is more", says Mies van der Rohe :P
By the way, the girl who created the bokeh brush is freakin' awesome! You should know her!
