Description

A selection of the large Chugutisaurid amphibians, to scale.

This artwork is now out of date. For a revised version see www.deviantart.com/artbyjrc/ar…

This small group ranged across the Gondwana continents from the Late Triassic through to Early Cretaceous. The largest and best known species is Koolasuchus (from fragmentary jaw bones), which was also the latest known Temnospondyl fom Early Cretaceous deposits. Chugutisaurids were from an unrelated branch of amphibians to modern groups, but had a passing resemblence to gigantic wide-headed versions of the living East Asian giant salamanders and hellbender from the USA (the latter is known collaquialy as the snot otter, in reference to their slimy skin).

I’ve seen that Koolasuchus was downsized to 3 metres, with a much smaller body. Wikipedia shows a reconstruction of it, with the size estimate based on Siderops. Many things online still say it is 4-5 metres. I’ll have to try and find a source for the smaller size.
