Ghostly hoof beats thundered across the sand and reverberated off black basalt cliffs. They haunted Asta by night in her sleep, and rumbled through her soul as she stood lost in a thirteen-year-old girl’s daydream. An expanse of ebony beach stretched before her. The crystal sea sparkled as lazy waves lapped against the shore. Morning sunlight reflected off the water and danced across the cliff face like prancing ponies. The sand butted against a tall, basalt wall that wrapped around the strand in the shape of a crescent moon. The cliff ended in a promontory topped by a stone lighthouse, like the horn of a black unicorn. Skyborn, Asta’s chestnut pony, stamped and snorted with impatience. Chapter 1: A Newcomer Enters the Hearth I awoke yet again, but to an unfamiliar touch. I sat up, glaring at the human who disturbed my rest. “Oh my, apologies for angering you. You overslept again, and we don’t want you late for breakfast, now do we? You should get ready first. I’ll be right outside.” The human handed me a keycard before stepping out.
