Great River Region Commission

Here is a second set of commissions I recently completed for Knight Errant Games' forthcoming Hero's Tears RPG. These two maps show the greater region in which the previous Barrowlands map is set. The color map is a "current day" look at the region whereas the B&W map shows the region as it appeared at an earlier stage in the world's history. Hope you enjoy.

Cheers,

Whoever lives here is only waiting on the day when that natural dam breaks...

Ha Ha, yes, there is much foreboding in the air.

looks great, though with the letter/numbers in the border I'd expect a grid, even if just a faint one

Thanks Vorrophaiah.  Yeah I agree.  The alpha/numeric border was part of the specs for this project however, while a grid was not.

Great old-school feel.

Thanks Vic, I was experimenting with a slightly more comic style with this one.

Might I please ask the method used to create this quietly alluring map? Did you use traditional painting, scan a line image and paint in a graphics package like Photoshop, use a 3D program like Bryce or Cinema3D?

I really would love to know. Thanks.

Sure thing Abraham.  This piece was digitally hand drawn using Photoshop Elements (I don't own CS and will instead be doing most of my future digitally hand drawn pieces using Krita, a wonderful piece of free software).  I used a calligraphy brush to better vary the line width of the line-work.  Shading was very basic - I used a very limited set of base colors and used I believe 2 lighter and darker shades for each color for the the shading (I used a fuzzy round brush and a larger airbrush for the shading).

Thanks very much. I so want to try making fantasy maps to go with the stories I sometimes write, but I had no idea how to begin.

My pleasure.  I'd recommend spending some time at the Cartographers Guild, if you haven't already.  It's a really supportive community with lots of resources for learning the craft.  I knew literally nothing about digital art or map-making before joining the Guild some years ago.  The tutorials section there are a great place to begin.  Best wishes on the adventure.

Cheers,
-Tad

I can just imagine what evil an explosive-capable villain would be able to here XD

Yeah the writers did a great job of introducing a lot of great adventure sites in this region.

Excellent map. Really like the waterfalls and the smoking volcano.
